I'm in the process of re-covering my old Superstar 40 to spruce it up a little. I got a roll of Ultracote in a checkerboard pattern, and had a roll of white Monokote at home. I find the Ultracote really good to work with and love the results, but the Monokote I can't seem to get the hang of. It doesn't stick without a high temp setting on the iron, and then doesn't tighten very well. I've used Oracover too and find it way better also. Any Monokote tips?

Iron the edges of the section your covering, then use a heat gun and rub it on with a soft mitten (not your wifes good ones) or cloth to make it stick???

Monocote tips .............................. use something else . You are not the only one haveing trouble with monocote It,s crap , check out RCU , theres plenty of complaints

Monokote has new instructions: I just finished covering a Carden 40% Extra 260 and after some initial difficulty it turned out pretty good. Use a Iron with a sock and keep the temp around 325 f. Start from the center of the area you are covering and work out to the edges pulling and stretching as you go. After you have the area covered go back over with a heat gun and shrink the areas that still have wrinkles. You may have to do this a couple of times as Monokote shrinks as it cools. If the the Monokote is gassing and producing bubbles you have the heat to high. In the Monokote instructions it says to set your iron just below the melting point, I found this to produce lots of gassing and crappy results.

Monokote has been crapped on here as well other sites and I have been part of that. The new Monokote is a great product, we just have to change our technique (read the instructions) for covering. I have used Ultracoat, Coverite and various other products and they all have there place in our hobby.

Who needs the hassle, who needs the "Learning process"

Oracover and Ultracoat are the same product. Much easier to use and much better results.

I have used most of the coverings and have had good results after getting the heat correct for "me". I have had my problems with Ultracoat no different than I have had problems with Monokote. The last airplane I covered with Ultracoat that I just bought from the Hobby shop. I had problems with that after reading on RCCanada it was a great product. I don't know if age has a connection to the result or not.
I find that most problems result from where one applies the heat while moving across the structure. Compound curves require heat well ahead of the point of contact while pulling the covering in place. Monokote has always given me more of a problem here but once done is a very durable covering. I have won awards for covering on airplanes I had used
Monokote!
It seems to me that the adhesive part of the covering has changed, even at the seam/joints the covering is not saying on as long as it did years ago??? I have been sealing with Cyano on laps and joints that tend to be hit by exhaust oils.

Thanks for the advice guys. I got the fuse done and it's a least decent, but I think once the wongs are done and I've used it all up I won't buy any more Monokote. Ultracote is king.

I am in the same boat.... only Ultracote and Coverite Fabric covering for me from now on!! Just don't need the hassle!
