Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???
Yup - fly twin VPX 1100 packs on all my 50 cc gassers now. Save the 2300's for bigger birds ie 35% and up.

Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???
Jack, I am fairily new at the setup of larger planes. I have an AW Yak 54 85" span with a 50cc gasser for power. I have in the setup an Opto Gas Kill switch and a 2 Pak Battery Backer using 2 2700 maH 6.0v NiMH AA packs for the RX (2.4 MHz ) and 5 coreless digital servos. And I fly IMAC competition.
My question: In your experience, do you feel a Power Expander is really necessary for this size plane? Sure it wouldn't hurt and would be nice to have but is it really necessary? I'm on a limited budget and have to watch my pennies. And there is so much varied opinion, even by the big boys, if you know what I mean, as to using or not for a 50 cc size plane. These things are not inexpensive, to me anyways, I don't want to spend the coin, if its not really necessary. I would appreciate your input...perhaps you input will also help others in my position to make the right decision. Seeing that this topic is on power expanders and whether to use them or not, it would be ok for me to ask this question here! Thanks in advance.

I'm not Jack, but for fun I posted the exact question I did here over on Flying Giants Talk about poking a Hornets nest with a stick Its up to 4 pages and getting close to 400 views in a very short time. There is some interesting reading. On page 4, even Tom Fawcette the owner of Wild Hare RC jumped in and had some interesting things to say. Not that I want to direct anyone from here, but I thought it might be an interesting read. http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...er-expand.html Never pay again for live sex! | Hot girls doing naughty stuff for free! | Chat for free!

Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???
Bdegan, that definitely was an interesting read! Holy differing opinions Batman!
I liked the comment from the one fellow there who said people need power expanders because they haven't learned how to plug things properly into their receivers! LOL! Now don't go jumping on me, I didn't say it, I just found the comment funny! I would like to find the answer to this question though. Where do amps come from or how are they produced? I mean, the fellow said that a single Hitec digital servo will draw 1.5 to 2.0 amps, so multiply that times 8 ( 8 servos )and you have the 8 servos drawing from 12 to 16 amps. Then he asked, how can a 5 amp switch handle that kind of current? Where do all those amps come from. I don't really understand it so I would really like to know! You have one single 2200 maH A123 pack, which is 2.2 amps, how do servos get to draw 12 to 16 amps from a much lesser power source?? What am I missing here? Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this as I really don't understand it!

Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???
Hi Gary,
As you have found out, this is an extremely sensitive subject I use the PowerBox systems, which are a little different than SmartFly but both do a good job. To answer your question, NO it is not neccessary to run a power expander on a 50cc plane nor a 150cc.I have a lot of trust in my electronic setups which generally include a power dist. setup..Since I started using the PowerBox setups 7 years ago, I have never lost an aircraft due to electronics. Gary, as you well know nowadays it's fairly easy to spend $2000 on a 50 cc setup buying all new..I feel the bang for the buck is there..I'm not an electronics guru, just know what works "flawlessly" for me everytime Quote:

Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???

2200 Mah is 2.2 amps. But it means 2.2 amps for one hour at the rated voltage output, which is 6.6 volts. When servos draw 12 to 16 amps. Which is a very very rare occurance, it means all 8 servos are fully stalled under load. Does this ever happen ??? Yes, but Not often, at all. But if it does, it is for seconds. And probably never sees seconds in the double digits. That is why guys report only using an average 150 to 450 Mah per flight. There is never a constant draw of 12 to 16 amps. Re: To Power expand or not power expand ???
Thank you for your input Jack, much appreciated.
So basically what your saying is, that although not absolutely necessary, for the money it's good insurance and worth it for the piece of mind it provides. Like when I use a redundant battery system, even in my smaller planes, just in case one pack fails? Lots of folks only run with one pack and are satisified that running two packs is not really necessary! Something like that anyways! And you are correct about the expense of even a 50cc plane. I got my AW Yak 54, like the one you have/had for almost 1/2 price but I see that just for the airframe its almost $1000.00 alone now. Add engine, prop, spinner, battery packs, decent servos etc, and upwards of $2500 is not a stretch. I must say, you've got me rethinking this whole thing now!
