Cutting servo hole in ultracote

I remember seeing somewhere a neat idea about a method to cut through covering to expose the servo hole (in a wing for example) (not using a blade).

I'm sure it was a movie clip and it might have used a heated something-or-other but I can't find it now.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Re: Cutting servo hole in ultracote

I use a soldering iron. have also used a T-pin heated with a lighter.
The cutting with heat kind of melts the covering into the wood making it stay down very well.

That's what I'm trying to achieve without frayed edges.

Re: Cutting servo hole in ultracote

A pencil soldering iron will do a nice job of "cutting" iron-on film. A round tip is also nice to use to "drill" holes through the covering where screw holes in the surface are there for hatches, servos, etc. Good luck, Dzl

Re: Cutting servo hole in ultracote

What I did is this: instead of cutting the covering out around the hole, I just cut and X from corner to corner. This allows me to slip the servo in and not have any loose covering that can get caught by the wind. As long as the servo isn't smaller than the mounting hole in the balsa then it should fit snuggly up against the cut covering.
