Using a receiver battery for an electric plane.
My ESC has a BEC circuit, so, when I plug the ESC in the throttle channel of the receiver, it is powering up the receiver. Now, I want to use a separate NiMh battery for the receiver and the question is: do I have to just plug the battery in the Batt port of the receiver? That means the receiver is powered simultaneously by two sources of power, the BEC and the NiMh battery. Is that OK?
Assuming the setup I described is OK, how much power is used by the receiver from the BEC and how much is it used from the NiMh battery? Will the receiver battery will last longer if the receiver is using some power from the BEC as well? Plane: Alpha 40 Conversion from glow to electric ESC: Turnigy Plush 60A with SBEC Battery: 4S 4000mAh 20C (might use 5s 5000 mah) Prop: APCE 11x7 Receiver pack: 4.8V 2500Mah Energizer

Re: Using a receiver battery for an electric plane.
From what I understand this, running them together, should not be done, it can damage the bec circuit. You would need diodes to prevent power flow to the BEC from the battery pack.
Yes you can run separate battery, but you have to disable internal BEC, very beneficial if you run power sucking servos or if the main unit fails, you have a separate power source to run the radio. Same as running a separate BEC but better security. If you run 4S and up you should run separate BEC anyway, the build in ones get iffy at that power level. Dan |

Re: Using a receiver battery for an electric plane.
"if the main unit fails" - that's my main concern. I saw it happening to another guy, but he landed safely because he used a separate receiver battery.
I'll try to figure out how to disable the BEC.

Re: Using a receiver battery for an electric plane.
Just have a look here, usually you just pull the red wire from the rx plug to the BEC like in this :

I prefer to pull the red wire from the connector and wrap the exposed red connector with electrical tape; That way if you ever need the ESC power in the future, it is easily reversible.

Saves messing around with the contacts in the ESC plug, but does introduce another (electrical connection) failure point into your set-up.......your call. Narly1 |

6s lipo in and still run his servos. The max output is 5v/3amps for this BEC. Gotta love these Plush esc's. Chris

OOooh! Good one. I like your idea best. Easy, safe and reversible.
