If you do get an alarm, dont buy the cheapies- The cheap alarms are factory preset and you cannot change the alarm setting. Unfortunately, they are set for too-low a voltage to do you any good. you want to set your voltage alarm to 3.5V/cell or 3.6V/cell. HK sells a good programmable alarm with 2 speakers that only costs about 5$. You can also get them from your local hobby shop (LHS) http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...age_Alarm.html Quote:
Good idea! You can learn a lot more face-to face talking with people than you can on the internet

Re: First post, first purchase questions.
Max, you covered a lot of ground and I appreciate that.
I did not buy the DX5, a good friend lent it to me to use with a simulator, he said exactly the same thing that it was a pretty basic unit and once I spend the time with the simulator and join a club and am ready to buy a plane I will have a much better idea what transmitter makes sense. I am very close to the Dunrobin Flying Club field and have made contact with them, hope to meet up face to face soon to start the learning curve. I am fascinated by the complexity of Lipo batteries and have started to read up on the web site provided by one of the previous responders. I learned when I was very young and tried for my private license that this is a hobby that needs to be learned before one spends any money, I figure that rule applies to full size planes also applies to radio control. Plus until I figure out how interested I become and even what size plane to have I need to talk to knowledgable folks a lot, maybe us old foggies can learn. |

If I can add one concept; buy the most Tx that you can afford. Even if you do not use it to it's full potential right away it will allow you to increase in complexity for a fair while without having to upgrade and will be worth the cost in the long run, especially if you do as Max says and look for a good used one.

Re: First post, first purchase questions.
Well I feel like I am on the right track, that being caution, I have found the Dunrobin Club about 10 minutes from my home and spent some time there chatting and watching, compared to what I remember from my flying lessons back in 67, this is pretty scary as your perspective is not with the plane but watching from the side.
This probably explains some of the reason why I have yet to successfully take off and land on the simulator. So in summary, the folks at Dunrobin confirm everything stated here, go slow, listen lots and spend time on touch and goes,,easier said than done. Cheers Norm |
