How hot is too hot after a flight?

I am using a 4035 530 Scorpion on a Logo 600 SX using 10 S 4000s.

After a 6 minute flight the motor is too hot to hold my hand on it (uses approx. 2200 mA) But I want to fly immediately again. Should I wait unitl it cools down? Or is there a problem with the setup?
Possibly run at higher headspeed? Different pinion?

Moo,

Good point regarding what excessive heat will do to the motor. Perhaps that's why Scorpion recommends oiling their motors after 6 to 10 flights to save at least the bearings.

I also think the gearing is wrong. I'll need to think this through.

Ya give it a few minutes. I bought a lazer temp gauge from Canadian tire for $20 or so. My KDE is 70 degrees when I'm done flying and you will burn yourself if you touch it. The ESC is what you should be worried about. That motor should be rated for 180 degrees maximum before damage occurs. You shouldn't be getting anywhere near that I hope!

Get the laser it's handy!

Re: How hot is too hot after a flight?

Thanks, Craneman32.

I'll use a temp gauge.
The ESC is a Kontronic 80 HV and it's barely warm. The lipo is a Voltz 10S 4000 40C and it's warm and very slightly puffed.

Overall, I've found transitioning to electric a challenge. I can't fuel and fly all day.

you have to cool it down otherwise it might be harmful for you. and agree with dashpuppy you should have a cooling vent .

Re: How hot is too hot after a flight?

Ken , just bring a nitro with you and you can keep flying while the batteries charge and the motor cools. That motor should not be that hot either so maybe up the head speed abit if your loading it to much. I found even though the cost may be cheaper for the electrics I still use my nitro's way more.
I do love the power and quick response of them, it is nice to just plug in and go but once the batteries are dead , you become a spectator quickly.

That's why you charge one as you fly one!

Thanks for the replies:

I'll up the headspeed; I need to get a tach. and a friend

There is an opening on the canopy to vent the motor.

Thanks again.

Re: How hot is too hot after a flight?

Jason , you keep saying that and after 40 years in this hobby and flying elecrtic, nitro's and gassers I am sorry buddy your missing the point. I do have an excellent 10 amp charger and use Pulse Ultra's and charge em fast, but........I have 11 to charge and all different sizes so I can't wait all the time. You see every day I take out 2 or 3 heli's and an electric plane and a nitro plane as well. I fly all day BUT if I were to wait for batteries on average I have to wait 15-20 minutes,so in a 5 hour flying session 2 hrs is waiting if I wanted to wait on batteries, so instead I just fuel up something else and go. I do both and it works great, if I were to start out with electrics only I have to charge and attend my charging for just over 2 hours the night before so all is ready, my others I just plug in to charge over night and go. Do you get what I am saying, I am not arguing which is better as that is personel choice, I just stated you gotta wait if you wanna fly continously all day. So let's just enjoy all our aircraft's. I usually bring at least 4 aircraft every day.

Re: How hot is too hot after a flight?

Ken that is perfect, you'll notice a big difference with the air intake, my 600 you can hold the motor as long as you'd like after a flight, it has stock gearing and I do 3D for the 5 minute flight.
Gotta love the power though when you get it right.
