Exclamation Ok came to a realization yesterday

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but am anyway.

Ok came to a realization yesterday after a few days of searching for a replacement for my Daily driver (DD). My DD had the tranny creator, and went looking for a replacement – new and used. Decided I didn’t want to pay $450 month for a new car, than even $200 month for a 6 year old car. But did buy an old used car for $250.

Now what realization did I come to? I spend more money on RC than i do on something i use every Day.

Well when I want a RC (toy) I will pay quite a bit for them. EG: My raptor E550 - frame $400, motor $65, ESC $80, 4 – digital servo’s $160, main blades $75, LIPO’s $200, RX $60, which = $1,040. (Does not include TX).

And don’t want to spend much on my DD?
And that does not include my second heli.

And paid more for my Alouette (that collects dust), than my DD.

Something crazy there!!

Anyone else do the same??????

Re: Ok came to a realization yesterday

I guess it boils down to how far you drive say to work and back and what happens if you are late. If there is just you to drive around or do you have a family . Do you like to break down frequently etc etc.Choices of transport do have various reasons.
Really not sure where you would get a new car for $400. a mos,but new is the way to go as most are what they call interest free and used is up around 8%interest

Re: Ok came to a realization yesterday

That sounds familiar! I would rather spend time and money with my R/C aircraft and vehicles than on other things!! I need to get my priorities straight!!! Or, maybe, my R/C stuff is a priority...?

My philosophy is to spend your money on what gives you joy, pleasure, and a sense of happiness; after the bills have been paid, of course!

Or, you could always put aside an R/C fund?

Re: Ok came to a realization yesterday

I have friends that MUST buy the newest car avery 2 years, otherwise, what will their neighbours think.

To me, a car is an appliance, like a stove; I use it to get to point B from point A. I have a newer vehicle in the driveway so I took a chance on a '97 Lumina for $500 (previous owner left the province and had to get rid of it). I swear, it is the best daily driver I've ever owned. It allowed me to spend money on triathlon ($2000 bike) and my planes.

Good luck with your 'new' car Nemesis. I hope you get the same out of it as I have out of mine.

Marc

The solution is simple.... build an 1/3 scale R/C car and ride it to work...knocks off two birds with one stone

Couldn't say it better myself. I don't care if my stove is worth 5 grand, as long as it cooks my food. I don't care that the gas in my tank is worth more than the car, as long as it gets me to work (take the bike most days FWIW)!

Cars are the worst investments going, but RC equipment isn't too hot either It boils down to putting your money where it makes you happy. Driving an old beater kind of makes me happy, because when it dies I'll just shrug, buy another one, and know I'm saving thousands over those buying new cars all the time

My 2c!

BTW, Next time a neighbour is selling a car, give me a call Marc, thats one heck of a deal

Whoops! Sanity check alert light = ON....

If you regard a car as an investment, then it should be parked and kept in pristine condition and then flogged at the next Barrett-Johnson (whatever...) auction.

Cars are a consumable, they are a continuous drain on your income (fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking...) Which is what you said.

However, it looks as though you have found your comfort zone but are having feeling of anxiety over it.

Nemesis, as Dr. Phil keeps saying "Get over it!"

Yes, I drive a 2001 Volvo V40. Got a deal on it -- all-in cost from the end-of-lease reseller came out $3000 less than the dealer wanted before taxes and everything else. I'm happy with it.

If I won the lottery, my next car will be a Volvo but it still won't be an investment. Not putting 15000 KM a year on it for the hobby.

Nemesis, don't beat yourself to death over whether or not you did the right thing. The real answer is that you did, your spouse must agree because you didn't mention getting grief from her (assumption , yes).

Go fly and blow those seeds of second-guessing yourself out of your head....
