Re: Kyosho Spitfire build

Engine is on it's way - I bought a Saito FA-72 from HobbyWholesale.

I routed the control rods in the fuse today and loaded the servo tray and fuel tank. I LOVE the way this plane goes together - very well designed and built up.

One recurrent disappointment with Kyosho is the there are no exit holes on the fuse for the elevator and rudder control rods...you have to cut your own. Same issue on the S-2C Pitts. No big deal, but with all the built in detail on their ARFs this strikes me as odd.

Another thing with the Spitfire is the aileron control horns. The mounting bolts are the type that go all the way through and then screw into a backplate on the other side of the aileron. This is a strong setup, but on the Spitfire the aileron is so wide that it's nearly impossible to drill the holes perfectly aligned to the backplate. I would have preferred simple wood screws.

Must say though, fun build. No suprises, everything works well and fits tight without any trouble. This will be a solid, tough plane.

Re: Kyosho Spitfire build

I put together their ME-109, I was very pleased with the quality of their ARF. The one thing I did change was I pealed back the plastic covering where the wing skins join in the center and glued some 1 1/2" long 3/32 balsa across the joint with the grain running the same direction, this marries the balsa covering together making the wing a lot stronger. I had the wings on my Streamliner fold due to a short wing brace. You see the skin is the strength. Mine came with retracts, I installed a short piece of 1/8" plywood under the rear mount, it moved the wheels ahead nearly an inch.

Re: Kyosho Spitfire build

Spitfire's coming along nicely, almost done. I've been too busy with other things to keep a good build log, but here are a couple pics. The Saito FA-72 was a good fit, and the model balances perfectly with the battery back where the receiver goes (right below the cockpit). I made a pilot from scratch as I couldn't find one ready-made that was the right size. He turned out great! I call him Roger.
