I am about to move in July and wondered if anyone had any experience when dealing with the moving company regarding RC Airplanes. Any advise?? Will they move them at all due to how fragile they can be?

Re: Moving of Airplanes

Not sure how far you are moving, but any friends that I have that moved, did it themselves. Movers looked after the furniture, he looked after his giant scale models. Movers don't really care, and are inexperienced in handling aircraft.

Re: Moving of Airplanes

Posted i am guessing .. i went out and made coffins for mine and a friend of mine did the same. planes in the coffins made out great.. ones not in coffins did not fare so well , it was a year long battle to get the claim finalized ... they will move them but they wrap them in paper and put them in a box...
i made the coffins out of 2x2 and fibre board , used high density foam board to make slide in inserts to hold the planes. i figure its cheaper and easier to replace the inserts to fit other planes if i change the fleet , plus the foam is safe against the planes skin

Re: Moving of Airplanes

Don't let the movers move them! They'll be trashed. I asked if they could move mine and the guy just looked at them and says, what happens if they get dropped or thrown? If you build wood boxes for them it may work. Personally I would move them myself. Beg, borrow or steal a trailer to do it.

Re: Moving of Airplanes

We sent our sailplanes to Europe in wood boxes, no problems, because we put foam on the OUTside of the boxes! Through the window, we saw the baggage smashers come to the crates, and CAREFULLY load them into the aircraft. There was hardly a dent in the foam when they got to Amsterdam...

Yes I am posted, to Moose Jaw, Sask. I think I may pull my boat and fill it full of airplanes...definitely the safest....

Re: Moving of Airplanes

When I moved from Edmonton, back to Sask, a number of years ago, I was faced with the same problem.

I didn't have the room to haul my planes and had no choice but to ship them with the movers.

My company wouldn't pay for custom crates, so that kind of left me in a bind. Then, one of the movers suggested U-haul wordrobe boxes. These boxes are a lil heavier than the normal ones and also have a metal hanger bar in them, and are quite large and sturdy.

I went and got a couple and wa laa!!.. instant airplane shipping boxes.I was able to ship all my models and model stuff in them, with the exception of my 1/4 scale cub, which I made room for in my truck.

Might be a thought.....

Grant
