Has anyone flown the Top-Flite Cessna Skylane on floats??
Has anyone flown the Top-Flite 182 Cessna Skylane on floats? I have flown a Sig Kadet LT-40 on Great Planes floats with a OS-46LA engine with good success. I have also flown a Sig Citabria 60" span with a OS 61 on Great Planes floats. I had to add an extra stabilizing fin on the bottom to keep it straight.
I have purchased and am assembling a set of Balsa USA 1/4 Scale EDO floats for the Cessna. They are 44inches long. They are better looking than the Great Planes and a little lighter. I intend to cover them with Chrome Monocote just to be fancy. I still have not flown the Cessna on wheels yet. The way things are going in Northern Ontario I will probably fly the maiden flight on skis and the floats next Spring. The plane weighs 12 lbs on wheels and I'm using an OS 91 with a three-bladed prop. I have ordered a second rudder for the floats and intend to mount a micro servo with 41 oz-in torque in the back of each float. The servo rod will come through the float transom in a silicone tube and be sealed with petroleum jelly. If you check my gallery under freebelle2 you can see pictures of my float planes that I have and the Cessna as it was being built. I would like to hear from someone who has flown the Cessna on floats Here is a photo of the floats to the present stage. I need to cover them and balance them. Do you think they will work?? |

Here is the stage I'm now at with the Cessna floats. I'm going to change the struts to streamline aluminum tubing when they come in the mail. The Balsa USA EDO floats make an awesome kit with which to work. They required no additional weight to balance and all the key points ie step and length were right on the mark. The only thing I will change are the wooden struts. They are just not secure enough.

I saw a TF Cessna on Balsa USA floats fly at Shuswap a couple years back. It flew very well and the owner was very happy with it. You should have a winner there.

Are you going electric with it, or is it going to be IC? After seeing what you have done with your little GWS airplanes, I can't wait to see the details you add to a large canvas!!

Sea Commander floats
From what I see on the website, the sea commander are excellent floats. They are very scale-like and as a result are not cheap. The advantage is the choice of sizes to fit different planes. I have read that the Cessna CMP doesn't perform as well on floats. Check some of the earlier discussion in this forum for comments on the CMP.
