I have used the West System for years building canoes and kayaks and I know that not only does it fix the cloth to the substrate but in combination with the glass cloth it provices a very high portion of the total strength in a semiflexible surface. This allows the surface to flex some what without any structual damage to the epoxy. I do not belive the other stuff will provide the same strength. So if your structure and design is dependent on the fiberglass cloth providing stuctural integrety you might want to be cautious here.

I use the West System undiluted.
First finish the surface as to how you want it to look. Dings and flaws will show up.

Lightly spray the surface to be covered with cheap hair spray or 3m spray adheasive. Buy doing this less of the resin will soak into the wood but still enough to form the bond needed. Lightly Apply remember that. Some feel the 3m adhesive holds the cloth in place better when applying the resin.

I use the 206 hardener to give me the longest working time.

I use empty 35 mm containers (clear) to mix and mark the volumes on the side so I can see the measurment. I have found to much waste using the pumps except for large areas like the canoes and kyakes.

Plastisized playing cards or old credit, phone cards all work the best for spreading the resin out.

After the cloth is on and you spread the resin the next trick removes all access resin. Use a roll of toilet paper and roll over the surface soaking up all access resin. Remove just enough of the roll to expose dry paper as you go. By using the 206 hardener you can spend a fair amount of time and soak up more resin than you though possible.

At this time the cloth is fully saturated but you have removed so much resin you can see and feel the weave of the cloth. To fill this there is a primer called feather fill. It is very light and can be sprayed or brushed on. This is much lighter than any resin mix you will concoct to fill the weave. Additional resin will not add noticibly to the strength of the stucture.

Another good point about using feather fill is that unlike resin it sands much the same as balsa.

http://www.minwax.com/products/prote...polycrylic.cfm

minwax page that has polyc. doesn't list dealers but I believe that Can Tire carries it. Home Hardware too.
