I have something similar set up for myself, it is called "The Martin Fund"

I set up a separate savings account with my bank that is used exclusively for saving up for a Martin Guitar that I plan to buy.

You can setup your bank to automatically transfer money from one account to another. I did this online and set it to do this every payday for the next 5 years.

I get paid every 2 weeks and at each pay period, $25 goes to The Martin Fund. What is nice about it is that you dont notice the $25 from each paycheque, but it adds up.
So far I have hit the $1500 mark. In a few more years I will be able to buy my prized Martin guitar and not feel guilty about spending that kind of money!!

Re: The Looney Jar!

This wouldn`t work for me. I live entirely on plastic and never have any real money. In fact, some kid came by soliciting for the high school football club and I had to run out to the machine just to get $20.00. Besides, if I had a jar, the wife wouldn`t be able to mind her business. What good is an empty jar.

I had that same attitude, until we had that power failure that affected all of eastern Canada and USA back in '93.

No power meant No Gas. No Credit cards. No bank machines. Nothing worked

You wanted something, you had to pay CASH. Convenience stores were doing good business, selling the stuff they had. But only if you had cash. Credit cards and bank cards meant you got NOTHING.

I had no gas for my car. With the power out, no gas stations were able to pump gas. The gas station in this little town hooked up a generator and was pumping gas. I went there and they only accepted CASH. I remember digging through my car pulling coins out of the cup holders to buy 10 bucks worth of gas. I needed more but 10 bucks was all I had.

Now I always keep about $ 100 in cash just in case.

Re: The Looney Jar!

I have a very slick method for funding the purchase of new planes...plunk down the credit card then spend the next 3 months trying to figure out how to pay 'er off.

Re: The Looney Jar!

I do this all the time that way when I get the urge to buy something, wich i often do. it helps smooth it over with the wife. I have a big jar of pennies that I toss all my loonies and tonnies into. you can't see how much you have in there when they are covered by pennies.

Not a bad plan Max, but I think in larger numbers. Big power outages can last a long time. I think $500 is closer to reality.
