Signal loss
Hi all, need some help figuring out an issue. I just built an aeroworks extra 60-90 with a dle20 in it. On my fourth flight i just about lost it when i seem to have lost control of the ailerons. I am using a futaba 9zhp radio and the preflight range check was fine. The plane wasnt all that faraway and the ailerons just seemed to twitch. I was trying to save it but mostly trying to find a landmark so i could find the inevitable wreckage. Then all of a sudden started to respond and i was able to land it quickly. I am running an rcexcell optikill but the engine never shut down. If the optikill shut down the engine due to signal loss, then seconds later enabled again as it regained signal, would airflow through the prop be enough to restart the engine? I cant remember if i heard the engine quit or not. Anyone heard of something like this? Im not gonna fly again untill i know what caused it but im stuck.
Any ideas? Broncoflyer. (currently self grounded) |

Re: Signal loss
No the engine would not restart. Also check and see if the RCEXL optikill stops the engine with radio turned off. You might find it does not. It should go to idle with your failsafe though.
I would check your ail. connections for corrosion. Clean them if they look dirty. Does not sound like a link issue as all your surfaces would have been lost and not just the ail. |

Re: Signal loss
Thanks for the reply. All new servos new plane new everything. Weird. Optikil does shut down engine when radio goes off. Hopefully my new 10c and 6014 receiver will solve it. That and a little shifting around of stuff in the fuse. 9z receiver was questionable. (I replaced antenna myself) hope to find out when receiver gets here next week

Re: Signal loss
I shook everything. Could never reproduce the fault on the ground. One thing i didnt do was use non metallic linkage from the throttleservo to the engine. Dont know why as the plane came with correct plastic tube linkage. Anyways, its plastic now. The other thing is the receiver antenna trails out the rear of the fuse and i wonder if it hitting the metal rear tailwheel bracket would have messed it up. The new fasst receiver should solve that if thats what it was.
Thanxs very much for your thoughts. Like I Said before im new to the bigger plane stuffand there arent any clubs within 150 miles. Lorne W. |

Re: Signal loss
Ignition noise can cause issues and you have both your Tach which is connected to the ignition and your Opti kill which is also connected to your ignition right next to your Rx. In my planes I have the RCEXL and tach up near the front with the ignition and the Rx toward the back.
I might put the opti kill up front and take the Ant. away from the tach. You can move your A123 back to compensate for the small weight of the opti kill moving forward. I also mount my ignitions up near the firewall. I also have the 10c and Fasst and love it. |

Re: Signal loss
I kinda cheated when putting that tach where i did. I wanted to see it through the canopy. But i will move the stuff and around like you suggested this week end when i get rid of the metal throttle linkage. I had seen a pic of another plane that had the ignition on top of the fuel tank to keep the cg better without having to add too much weight to the tail. I will move that up to the firewall like the build manual showed. I read on here somewhere that someone was having issues with the rcexcell optikill and the fasst receiver where the rx signal voltage wasnt high enough for the optikill to work and he had to run a signal booster to it. Have you had any problems with this? I called Valleyview rc where i got the stuff from and he had never heard of any issues. Not too worried about it but its in the back of my mind. Still waiting for the rceiver to get here.

Re: Signal loss
I've got 3 RCEXL opti's on Fasst Rx's and no problems.
The Tach should not be a problem with fasst. Your A123 could go behind and under the rudder servo to get the balance right without adding weight. I see no ignition pack, you running a IBEC? That could also effect the 72 signal, Fasst should improve that as well. Also when you move the opti kill up front mount the led next to your switch and fuel filler, nice to see if the ignition is hot or not when ever turning the prop over. Also check lateral balance and move the battery and or ignition in the fuse to the lighter wing tip. |

Re: Signal loss
Sounds good. I can do those changes. The dle ignition pack is currently wrapped up on top of the fuel cell. Aeroworks manual shows to mount it up front on the side of the engine mount box but I cheated for cg. Ill move that to where its supposed to go
