Challenging Days!

The Sky was clear and the temperatures were cool (+12C) so I headed off to the field do get some stick time in!

It was another great day of flying - but I was the only one there until noon. I guess the average guy doesn't like to fly in 22 kph winds (gusting to 39). But I DO!

This was the second day this week that I was alone at the field - which makes it tough - first off you should NOT fly alone (poor safety situation) and secondly - it is down right lonely out there!

But I overcame that with extra caution and a solid plane that has a very reliable engine!

I logged 10 flights this week with no one else in attendance!

My plane of choice is a Great Planes P51 Mustang powered by an OS 70 FS, both of which were new in 1992. (I am rewriting the text books on Aircraft longevity with this combination! )

An old buddy of mine once told me that if you only fly on nice days you won't get much flying in... so I learned how to use the rudder and take on the challenge of wind. Once I found the P51 and discovered how well it handled the wind - it was an added bonus!

I find that the high winds add a certain level of excitement and challenge that keeps the hobby 'Alive' for me.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's flying!

How many other guys are out there that enjoy 'High Wind' flying?

Re: Challenging Days!

Your so right, sometimes you have to push your comfort zone and just get out there. One of my favorite planes was that same GP 40 sized P51. Flew that baby up in the NWT for several years on wheels and skis! Got very comfortable with it in any wind and only a poorly planned inverted pass with a pull up that should have been a push up to go vertical ended its life. Everybody needs a windy day bird to keep the fun going. Nothing wrong with some solo flying...like you say take greater care around the motors as you have no help if things go bad. Enjoy

Re: Challenging Days!

Last night was student night and the winds were howling.

People showed up and left. "too windy"

New student showed up with an Apprentice. "Too windy?" "Nah, lets fly!!"

Flew out all his batteries. What some people say is too windy for a Foam trainer like the apprentice was nothing to us. Other than the fact we froze our balls off, it was a great night to fly.

Re: Challenging Days!

Cool was the order of the day.

It's June and I was wearing long Jeans and a nice warm jacket - I also had on a Tilley Hat with the Chin Strap Snugged Up!

I may not have been pretty - but it worked!
