Multiple speed controls

Is it possible to run 2 to 4 brushless speed controls off of the single throttle channel on a receiver using Y's ?
The reciever and servos would be powered with its own batteries. The red wire from the ESC's would be disconnected since BEC power would not be required.
Or is it best to plug each ESC to its own channel and slave them to the throttle ?

Re: Multiple speed controls

I've run 2 on the same channel. Don't think 4 would be a problem as long as the run is not too long. As with all channel outputs, the single position wires do not carry voltage or current as position signals, but pulses.

Personally, in a 4 ESC rig I would tie a pair into separate channels and use mixing. This would allow the option of turning 2 off or throttel/rudder mixing for aid in turning on the ground or water.

A caution: Ensure that the red leads are separated out BEFORE the Y-connectors This way the BEC output is not only isolated from the receiver/servos, but from each other. You DO want all the black wires left intact.

Re: Multiple speed controls

Yes all red wires would be pulled from the connectors and not connected to anything.
Using 2 channels in a 4 ESC setup makes sense.

Thanks

Re: Multiple speed controls

I'd have to agree with Cougar429,

what happens it you loose a battery pack, connector or motor?
How would you reduce throttle on the other side?

Just a thought.

and best to only have one BEC running as they may not play nice

Re: Multiple speed controls

The receiver and servos would have their own power, probably A123's as its a rather large plane I am planning.
No external BEC's at all, no internal BEC's, disconnected.

I was also thinking 2 channels for control
One channel for the 2 inboard motors and one for the 2 outboard.
