Picton Airport Flying--Finished

I just got word that modelers are no longer permitted to fly from the Picton airport. Modelers have been flying from this airport for a long, long time and it's a real shame that it is now closed to us.
Probably one of the best flying sites in Ontario.

I was really getting addicted to flying off pavement, too! I guess that will really impact the scale rally.

Picton flying

Yeah, we do have another site but it's grass and a lot smaller runway. I can't see the scale rally being held there.

The airport's insurance carrier would not issue a liability policy if we were there. At least, that is my understanding. I guess it didn't cut it with them that MAAC covers us.

Let's face it, since 9-11 insurance companies rule the world, not governments, or people. It's all bottom line/risk exposure/paranoia.

Dave,

Its Paranoia more then anything else, people/ certain insurance companies still don't understand that this hobby and our models are safe miniatures flying machines to handle under guidelines and rules already imposed upon us......

Concordefan,
I totally agree with you on this.
The problem i have with all of this is that we have had a club there for like 30+ years and NOW the property's insurance company has an issue with it?

FWIW, here's the e-mail I received on this from our club's Treasurer:

"Regretfully I have to inform all members that the Prince Edward R C Flying Club has been notified by Loch Sloy Holdings, the owner of the Airport site, that they will not be renewing our lease for the use of these facilities. The reason given is that their Insurance Company will not provide liability coverage if they allow the flying of model aircraft off the runways. Unfortunately, this means that aeromodellers can no longer fly at this location.
The club will now use our alternate grass field site on Rosseau Rd., and flying activities in the future will take place at this location."

This will really hurt a lot of modelers!
Myles

Don't airport property owner know anything about MAAC that is our governing insurance body!!, i am sure in 30+ years they must have heard about it, it really seems to me as personal issues that proper tier had/has, have had with modelers being there, its shame and dis hearting that this has happened. I feel for you Myles and many other modelers who go and fly there on regular bases. You are welcome to come and fly at our field anytime you want, its does have 2 grass runways 500' each.
