Hollow door here too. Bought about a hundred yrs ago at a house wreckers. Still as straight now as it was then. A few drilled holes and knife gashes but still works great. A vertical foam cutter screws to the front of it.

You'll love it, magnets and weights and pins only needed for one part to another.

Re: Building surface

Parchment paper is see through and does a better job than waxed paper.

Re: Building surface

Use a sheet of foam insulation board 1 to 2 inches thick from the local hardware store. It is perfectly straight, flat and smooth and is great for pinning parts to while gluing your model together. I usually put plans down on the board, then cover with wax paper(that you can see through). Then you can pin down your parts on top of the wax paper with glue etc. Pink or blue foam work well. I used the blue foam 1.5 inches thick.

Re: Building surface

I'm a door core/ drywall guy. You can draw on the dry wall, then fill and paint over it after. Nice and level and true, and if you attach the drywall with screws, it's easy to move and store, even with a project pinned to it

Re: Building surface

I found 2'x4' sheets of cork at home depot and glued them to a sheet of 3/4" plywood. Made for a perfectly flat build surface thats large enough to work on and "pin" multiple projects at once! I also have a 4'x8' sheet of light gauge galvanized steel that I can lay on top of the cork if I am using my "Airfield Models" jigs and magnets.
So far the only complaint I have about my set-up is that I built my table into a corner and can only work from one side. If the space permits....I'd recommend leaving all four sides accessible.
Sorry for rambling lol!!!

Re: Building surface

Solid core door and Homasote to cover it. Absolutely the best material to use pins on. I used this stuff when I had my model railroad and hand laid the rail and ties. The small spikes held the track in place no problem. Pushing a pin in is easy and it holds better than anything else I have tried.

Hi Lazy Ace - where do you buy Homasote in Canada? Like you I used it for trackbed years ago but cannot find any at local lumber dealers.

Re: Building surface

I bought mine from a independent building supply in Windsor now closed. Still have some so I am good for a bit. If you go on the Homosote web site it will direct you to the closest dealer. I believe this may be the one nearest you
