Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log
JTec recommends using Gorilla glue to sheet the foam cores and it is a method I've used several times and am comfortable with. This is the first time however I have built a foam core wing without some kind of spar. Instead, JTec provides a drawing showing the layout of carbon fibre tow on both the top and bottom surface of the wing. I glued the outer ends of the cf tow to the foam cores with foam safe CA. Since these function as the spars, I wanted to make sure that there was a good glue connection between the cf and the foam and balsa. Alan came over to help me with my wings and he took care of brushing the Gorilla glue into and onto the cf tow. One great idea that Alan came up with, was to warm up the GG in a cup of boiling water to the point that it was very thin and easy to brush into the cf tow.
At the same time, I was busy spreading the GG on the balsa skins. The skins had already been trimmed and sanded and marked as being for the top or bottom of the right or left wing. This saves time and reduces the chances of applying glue to the wrong side of a skin (yes, I have done this in the past!) The trick here is to get a thin but consistant thickness of GG on the balsa skin. We did not heat up this bottle of glue because it was easier to manage the spread of the glue if it was thicker and more viscous. I came up with the idea of notching a Timmies card, sort of like a notched trowel for spreading tile cement. You end up with a nice consistent layer of GG with just enough foaming action to really penetrate the balsa skin and the foam core. Including the cf tow, we used about 4 ounces of GG for each side of the foam core. A side benefit of the GG is that it gives the balsa a nice tough but not brittle 'skin'. Once we had the cf tow wetted out and the balsa skin coated, we give both surfaces a spray of water to activate the GG before putting them into the foam shucks. Once both sides were done, the shucks were put into a press made of two pieces of 1" heavy melamine and a bunch of sand bags were spread out on top. The balsa skins at the leading edge were clamped together to ensure that they bonded firmly to the foam core. Everything was left to cure over night and the next day, the excess balsa was trimmed and the cores are ready for the leading and trailing edges.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log
I marked out the location of the ailerons and the servos. I am doing split ailerons so I can use just the outer ailerons for precision IMAC flying. This will give me the advantage of the "shorty" aileron for regular IMAC flying and still give me the option to add full length ailerons if needed.
The leading and trailing edges were glued on with wood glue.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log
Hi Gordon,
We got to show the plane off and Kevin took 3rd place with the MX2. Kevin worked DA booth on Saturday as they need some help. Dave was not feeling well( Kevin worked for DA for a couple years ) Other than that we didn't spend a penny. Actually we didn't see anything we needed or wanted. Like most shows now there are turning into large hobby shops. Al |

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log
Been busy dealing with some business issues but I was able to get the wing incidence set over the last few days. The horizontal stab was set at 0 degrees (relative to the top of the fuselage) and the wing was set at .7 degrees positive. I've been very happy with the way my Dalton flies in this setup and Kevin at JTec confirmed that many of the guys with these planes have done the same thing. The aluminum 1/4-20 studs are fastened to the inside of the fuse with Seacraft aluminum knobs.
This is a big plane and it really fills up my shop!

Looks great Gordon. I really liked my old JTech monster but it was heavy and old school. Your kit looks well designed. What's your projects weight?
