Here's some work on the 1/4" thick balsa endcap after a diet of 0.8oz.

Now I'll recess in the hardwood blocks and glue on the encap.

Oh, and again, these wings butt up perfectly tight to the fuse with 0 trimming or sanding. These kits are incredibly accurate

Yeehaa!! The other wing half is under mondo weight and in it's shucks right now while the ProBond cures.

One thing I wanted to show, but forgot, is another great way to reduce weight of the wings and all other sheeted surfaces (and the reason it took me 10 hours to sand the 4 wing sheets )

(A) The first picture is the weight of one edge glued skin prior to sanding (rough cut to the foam core and slightly oversized)

(B) The second picture is the exact same sheet after intense sanding

(A) - (B) = a savings of 0.6oz per sheet or 2.4oz of savings on both wings. That's like getting 4 aileron servos for the weight of 3

Re: 40% Carden Edge 540 - BBT - Build Thread

My 3-year-old spend the afternoon at the flying feild with me and was totally worn out so he "hit the hay" early tonight.... it meant I was able to go hardcore on the second wing tonight and get them both to the same stage below

With the root caps and wing bolt hardpoints installed the right wing is now 2lb, 0.5oz and the left wing is 2lb, 0.2oz. I think I should be able to hit my target of 2lb 4oz for each wing which would make this superlight!!

Next I'll put on the LE and TE before setting the incidences at 0

Some more progress on the wings!

The LE and TE was glued on with ProBond and sanded to shape.

Each wing now comes in at 2lb, 1.4oz, so the LE and TE added only 0.9oz. I'll soon get the incidences set at 0° so I can cut out the ailerons

It's starting to look like an Edge!!

Nothing rocket science about them, just insanely time consuming! My wife keeps mentioning the "insane" part

For kicks, I weighed a wing half of my 35% Carden 330S (Patty Scheme) last night with no servos (the wing & aileron hinged, covered and linkages installed). It came in at 2lbs, 7.9oz!!

The difference in size between the 40% wing and the 35% is unreal side by side, so if I can get this wing it at 2lb 4oz, as per my target, I`ll be really happy that it`s lighter than my 35%!!!

My new target finished weight of this plane RTF is now 27lb 3/4lb!!!

Cheers

Trev
