Workshop ideas wanted

Ok, so I bought a new house, here's my chance to start all over and try to achieve some organization.

I'm looking for ideas to maximize space, reduce clutter and cut down on hanger rash in the new digs.
The new workshop is larger than my old one but, I've way outgrown the old one. I do have a vaulted ceiling in the new one, so I think a storage loft is in order but, I don't want to give up space to stairs....

I'm also thinking overhead tool caddies etc. Any ideas or pictures of what works for you are more than welcome.

Jim,
I have a fairly large part of a wall covered in pegboard for hanging tools on and other supplies. If I was going to do it again I would make them on a bracket to swing out and be able to close them up in a cabinet. I find the pegboard is the best for putting items on as they are more visible instead of being tucked in a drawer or box. It is very surprising what you end up having collected. On the swing type you could utilize both frt. and back.
Just an idea,
John

Good idea, thanks!

As you can see, we've both ventured down the single pegboard route.

Post a "pic" of your new work area. It'll be easier to give you some ideas!

I would but, I don't get it until July 30th....

Basically it's an attached, oversized garage with a vaulted roof. insulated, serviced and heated with a gas furnace mounted 10' up on one wall.

IOW, a clean slate.

I do plan to go with the central workbench that's accessible on all sides. I'm also thinking of an overhead tool caddy. I do need other workbenches as I enjoy framing and generally have 3 or 4 aircraft on the go at a time. I also need storage for existing aircraft/helis. I enjoy building so I need room for my floor model drill press, table saw, band saw, scroll saw, desktop lathe etc. etc.... you get the picture. Optimal use of space will be the key to make it all work.

work shop

Jim

for the table top power tools, I've seen a few shop ideas that place them on a triangular setup that allows you to rotate the tools to the one you would be using

puts three tools into the space of one

Don't forget to figure in a dust collector, especially since you are in the same room as your furnace

are you expecting to park the car in the garage also? you'd need to make everything easily moveable - one of the home improvement magazines awhile back had a garage shop plan that looked real nice - I'll try to find it for you.

i was leafing through magazines

i was leafing through some magazines a few days ago, and i don't remember which one, but it was a wood working type mag with some neat ideas for tool storage. it was on the shelves then, i should go look to see which it was.

it was basically a peg board system, but the peg board was on hinges, which were mounted on a wall. kind a like a window shutter without windows, you can use both sides of peg board, and if you mount several next to each other, you get tons of hanging space. just move the first out of the way like the pages of a book.

Workshop plans

Jim,

Did that plane crash on your bench or is it just too cluttered to get to?

Try this link http://www.woodworkersworkshop.com/r...ex.php?cat=102 if they don't have some plans and ideas for shop fixtures nobody will.

Brad

peg board

I saw a similar idea using pegboards - but they were on tracks that could be pulled out from under the bench, set into 1x2 or 1x4 frames giving the depth necessary for hte stuff hanging on the pegboard

think of pulling a book off a shelf - same concept - pull the peg board out
would take less space than hanging on hinges although they would be below the bench possibly
