Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

Trevor and anyone else doing engine tests, here is a suggestion for you when trying to measure the RPM of the engine when you are doing your Pipe Length Tests.

With any engine using the RCEXL Ignition system, the new ignitions ones now come with a TACH Lead.

I just plugged my RCEXL Tachometer into the lead.

I can get a RPM reading without having to hold a tach in one hand while I move the Transmitter Throttle with the other hand.

And you never have to worry about dead batteries in your Hand Held Tach!

It makes life a bit simpler!

In the picture I used the RCXKL Ignition Tester and turned the dial to obtain the 6500 RPM.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll start my Engine break in, BUT I am really anxious to test my new EME 120 with the custom BISSON Mufflers.

Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

Thanks Brian!! We have a tach on the stand for that lead, but it started acting up recently! I'll buy a new one!!

Really really anxious to get testing the 120!!! The day Brad is done with the stand / EME60, the 120 will be running!!

Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

Wooohoooo!!!

Brad finished up the EME60 testing yesterday and gave me back the test stand

The EME120 got mounted last night ... just need to make a few adjustments to the can mounts and throttle on the stand and it'll be ready for the full onslaught of tests!!

Here's what is planned over the coming weekend / week .....

a) Initial run in on stock mufflers for 30 min (seat the rings a bit, LOL)
b) Mufflers - baseline prop tests (I've got 7 different props to test)
c) Timing test (comparison on mufflers at stock 42degrees + retarded to 34degrees)
d) KS86 Cans - prop tests (we have great data for the DA120 and 3W110CS on these cans)
e) ProFlow Cans - headerlength and prop tests (we'll confirm if headerlength makes a difference - it doesn't on KS86 Cans, but we'll see on ProFlows)
f) EME Pipes - headerlength and prop tests
g) RE2 Pipes - headerlength and prop tests

After all of this is done, I'll be pulling the DA120/KS86 cans from my 37.5% Pilot Edge and throwing in the EME120/KS86 cans for some back-to-back comparisons in the air.

Really, really excited to get started on this!!!!... Hopefully Sat or Sun this weekend

Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

Alright! Got out tonight with the EME120 and got some base testing done. Here goes the report...

Timing:
* I tried to get the EME120 started at the stock 41.9degrees advance - all it would do is kick violently backwards.
* So I moved the sensor as far retarded as the slots would allow (34 degrees) --- after about 20 kicks backwards (and some awesome flame-throwing action out the mufflers, LOL ), I got it running. This was very dangerous and I`m very glad I had my big welder`s glove on. Each time I went to start it, it`d kick backwards about 15-20 times until it finally caught and started running. I will elongate the slots and set it at 28 degrees like any other engine

Operation:
WOW!!! Until now, I`d rate the BME116, DLE111 V4 and DA100L all in the running as the smoothest motors. I honestly think the EME120 may be the smoothest! Just beautiful I had a nice consistent, ultra-smooth idle at 1100rpm. It was vibration free throughout the rev-range
Hands down smoother than the vibra-master DA120.. not even comparable!! I'd also give it the nod over the 3W110CS for smoothness.

Needles:
* I had read on FG, that the 120`s were coming set at 1 turn on H and L and they need 1.5 turns.
* I checked and this one was 1 turn. Before running I opened them to 1.5turns.
* After 20min of break-in I tuned it... 1.5T on the low was perfect. I leaned the high to 1 3/8 T

Props Tested on Stock Mufflers
Falcon Carbon 28x9.5: 6460rpm
Falcon Carbon 29x9: 6160rpm
Beila 28x10 Carbon: 5720

* On the small props (28x9.5), the EME is about 200-300 shy of the DA120 / 3W110CS, but the DLE111V4 we tested last week did 6000 and a few well broken in DA100L's spin 6300.... so the EME is a strong motor!!!
* As the prop load increases, the gap widens bigtime to the DA120/3W110CS. The DA120 spun the Beila 28x10 at 6180 and the 3W was right there also... so a near-500rpm difference. The EME also doesn't have near the spool-up of the DA and 3W. It really suffered on the Beila.

My First Impression
Huge bang for your buck so far and definitely stronger than the DLE111V4, DA100L and BME116, but definitely not DA120 / 3W110CS territory.

We'll see how it does on pipes tomorrow ......

Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

Did you change to the boman rings like the da 120 or is it on stock rings trevor?

Cool testing so far.

I looked at the eme 120 from first batch and it looks like 28 - 30 deg timing

Sorry about the kickbacks.
I have set all engines to about 30 deg timing in the shop

Re: EME 120- mufflers, cans, pipes and props

be nice trev,, I was going to get one for my other edge but i have a dle 111v4 for the first one. I am getting excited to have 1/10 of your energy or time to get out.

Have you wieghed the eme cans ?

thats a thought for the next plane,, but sometimes i think that they are not worth it for a 200 rpm.. imo ..

james

ps might have to take picture so you know who i am..
