Wondering if anyone has ever tried to launch and then flew any of EDF Arrows available presently with Nike rocket as Avro Canada did with 1/8th scale test models over lake Ontario back in 1954.....

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

Not yet... but it's one of my goals...

I have flown a model rocket using a 1/72nd scale Hobbycraft model for the Arrow model. Flew very well! Got a handful of flights with it. Sadly a bad ejection charge caused it to lawn-dart. The Nike portion survived OK, but that plastic model did not care for the sudden meeting with hard-packed earth.

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

I don't know if anyone ever did an Arrow - but a long time back I saw a video of some fellows that did a 'Shuttle Launch' and after separation they had a great looking Glider.

So - the possibility exists...

That was most likely George Gassaway. I found one of his shuttle videos on (where else?) Youtube:

Well, OK. I don't know how to get the preview to show up... but the link should work!

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

Well, ..... the HK Arrow (aka stripped KMP Arrow) has arrived. The bungee launch ramp is built and I am checking out Estes rockets at the Source. I have the winter to rethink this insanity but I do agree the video should be worth the investment . I have to make sure all three thrust sources occur in the correct sequence with the correct timing and I haven't got the faintest idea what that is
should be a great spring !!!

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

How big is that plane, and what's the expected weight?

Here's the thing: if it's rocket-powered and over 1500 grams (~3.3 lbs) AUW, it's legally considered a "high power rocket", even if you're only using an Estes "A" motor. That gets you into requiring a launch authorization from Transport Canada (likely including a NOTAM to restrict the airspace), and also you need to a high-power rocket certification.

Perhaps MAAC has something to cover the use of rocket motors used more for "effects". I'm new to MAAC and my experience is all on the "rocket motor as primary propulsion" side.

Worst case, you buddy up with someone that already has the certification, and you fly at an organized high-power rocket launch. He flies the rocket, you worry about the plane. There's a small one in Ottawa, I think some in Manitoba (Winnipeg area), as well as near Montreal and down here in NB. Heck, you can skip the bungee and launch on the rocket motor!

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

Using the estes gives a 2 - 3 second launch boost only. The bungee is to be the primary launch thrust. 3,3 lbs is an interesting number if launch assist counts in the regs you quote. I'm not sure this model can be completed under that number. Maybe my helium bags will have to go in the fuse
The HK specs are:

Material: Fiberglass, balsa/ply
Wingspan: 724mm
Length: 1073mm
Flying Weight: 1500g~1850g
Motor: 28mm, 3.17mm shaft, 600w + (Not Included)
70mm 3 Blade EDF Fan Unit

I have the RC Lander 70mm alloy on a thrust test stand now. I think it will beat the eflite 15 but tests will tell. Maybe someone here has compared the two.

It's clear the secret of flying this model is getting enough battery for the weight envelope.

Kevin, as you clearly have some experience here,I will first ask the question of you regarding the phrase "rocket powered", "Does that mean any power provided by rocket or rocket as the primary power or rocket as the sole power?"

Re: Arrow with Nike Rocket...

So there is ambition to do this, would love to see it in person if possible or on video for sure....

I like the idea of this Shuttle with booster rockets as mentioned my CF105..

That was most likely George Gassaway. I found one of his shuttle videos on (where else?) Youtube:
