Question for electronics techs
smoke came out of my Thunder power 1010C charger. I shut it down quick, upon inspection, there is a component on the board that is fried. I'm unsure of what it is though.
It's a rectangular ceramic block that contains a coil. I know this because the ceramic is what cracked and allowed me to see inside the component. The only markings on it are 5W and BARO. Anyone know what it is so, I can start the search for a replacement? TIA Mike |

Re: Question for electronics techs
Have taken apart my working 1010C an checked the numbers on the resister you are referring to and to me looks like a 5Watt 1 ohm resister. Without the scematic is is hard to tell positively for sure.
I had a well used and abused 1010c that quit on me. Just smeled of burning rubber and shut down. Couldn't see any circuit board burns so sent it off toTP in Las Vegas and they said couldn't repair so they offered me $100 off of a new TP820C dual charger or $50 off of the 620 series. Took the offer on the 820 and love it. They also showed it as warrantee replacement or repair so I did have to pay any taxes when it arrived. What do you call that for service ???? Re: Question for electronics techs
As mentioned above, sounds like a resister? Post a photo of the component...

Re: Question for electronics techs
Thanks guys, I decided not to bother fixing it, I may take stegl's advice and just send it back to TP.
I went out and bought a new Revolectrix PL8 setup to replace it with. It was a good excuse to get a new system. Mike |

Re: Question for electronics techs
Have you ever looked at or considered Thunder power TP820 dual charger ? Have one and very nice. they had a few issues early on but don't seem to be any problems now. Also have a 2 year warrantee on them.

Just wanted to try something different and the PL8 seems to be acclaimed as the best charger available at the moment. It is only single port though ,although you can daisy chain multiple batteries to it. They also have a board called the MPI which allows you to charge 6 same cell count batteries at the same time. Tried it out yesterday and charged 6 3cell 2200 lips for my Trex 450 in 20 minutes Would have taken me 1.5hrs using my 2 xThunder power 1010C's in the past. Anyway, my $1 resistor burning out ended up costing me close to $500 lol Mike Last edited by luv2flyrc; 08-24-2012 at 06:55 AM. |

Re: Question for electronics techs

I have my 820 setup so I can charge 2 batteries each side ( up to 8 cells total max per side. Have to be the same capacity and Also balances at the same time. For example I have 4S plus 2S 4500mah set up to charge and balance in series on one port and the same set up on the second port. Actually the 1010C could have charged and balanced total of 3 of the 3S lipos at the same time in a series charge. Would have taken you only 15 minutes or less with the 1010c for 3 packs depending on the allowable charge rate of the lipos. IE 1c / 2c/ 3c or ? Last edited by stegl; 08-24-2012 at 06:31 PM. |

Power Lab 8= $244
MPA= $ 65 Assorted charge leads and connectors $ 50 Adapter boards for TP packs $ 35 Super cool Revo carry case $ 18 That's $394 right there plus taxes = $ 445 and that doesn't include the new 12v 47a Max amps power supply I picked up for another $100 bucks! Mike |
