From DOG to HOG

Hey everyone. About 2 years ago I purchased my secound plane. A Guanli A-10(same as the GWS) It was a compleate peice of cr*p just as the GWS was. The motors were brushed and it was VERY underpowered. I didnt know much about EDFs at the time, So I gave up on it and bought the Rafale wich was a Total joy to fly. Its always bothered me that I couldnt get that plane to fly. so........Im back to take another swing at it. For starters. If you heard that they replaced the Brushed motors with Brushless,... yOu are correct! BUT the brushless motors the installed are compleat garbage aswell and thats why you can buy the PnP version for only $95.

I bought this plane for $40 new in box from a fellow here on RCC. What Ive decided to do is...Take the 2 3500kv inrunner brushless motors I had lying around from my GP L-39s. I also have 2 CC35amp ESCs and HKing will be suplying me with the battery. A 4s 2650 40C Ive already ran up one motor and the numbers aint to bad. 330Wp at 20Ap x 2 ofcoarse. It should fly better than the stock motors that produced 7Ap at 50Wp. Yes thats what I said... 7Ap at 50Wp.

First thing to do was replace the stock 50mm fan units with a pair of 54mm units that were on my shelf. In order to make them fit, I had to carv away some material and I had to do this so the air would not be affected entering and leaving the nassel. I tapered it from the fan intake to a slightly narrower exit hole(80% FSA) This task was made easy by using what looks like a brillo pad Dremil attachment. Youll notice I added some white styreen sheet to the inside of the fan unit to tighten up the gap between the sroud and the fan.

Both motors are in and waiting to be fitted to the fues and wired to the ESCs.

Re: From DOG to HOG

With both Engine nacells compleat, its was time to move onto the wing. There is a bamboo reinforcement poll that strenthens the wing under the fues, but this offers very litle strenth beyond the landing gear pylons. I havent decided yet wether to Glass the bottom or just use packing tape. The one thing that is a neccesity is to sand alll the millions of injection niples and dents and to fill all the unessary craters and such. All the fake rivets have to be sanded off aswell, as this destroys the laminar airflow over the wings.

Re: From DOG to HOG

Decided to cut the Battery compartment larger to accomodate the 4s lipo. Theres lots of room to move the battery forward or rearward, its just a matter of getting it into the compartment.

I decided to go with Glassing the bottom of the wing. A litle more waight, but with the added waight of the two ESCs, Bigger Battery and higher speeds than this model has ever seen. I think the Gs would Fold the wings if I didnt.

Re: From DOG to HOG

Thanks Brad.. Ohh Happy times

I decided to glass both top and bottom of the wing. Its very strong now. I filled in the millions of tiny holes in the styrofoam with Polyseal. Everthing was then sanded and I coated the entire plane(minus the wing) with water based clear varithane. This gives added resistance to scratches and bangs on the soft styrofoam. After filling in all the panel lines on the wing(they were DEEP!) I then had to draw them back on. I know! they look very heavy and stark right now. Be Patcient, youll see there is a master plan to this.
