promoting soaring

I am considering creating a poster to attract people to rc soaring, would like to hear some positive feedback about advantages to the sport that would be used to create a promotional window poster about the hobby. Soaring of all aspects is appreciated.

Re: promoting soaring

Great idea DHansen!

But, how DOES one describe:

The rush when hitting your first "boomer" thermal?

The challenge of trying to keep up with the hawks in their thermal?

Or the feeling of pride when the hawks tuck & scoot over to check out YOUR thermal!

Responding to the crow's loops of the pure joy of the feel of the wind up the slope with loops of your own?

The panic one feels as a whacking big thermal rips up the hill & changes your day from gentle slope cruising into a "will I ever get this thing back" scramble!

How about the camaraderie at the end of the day as you compete to see who's glider can make it all the way back to truck as you walk out from the hill.

Or trying to explain to co-workers that you can't drink hot coffee today because the roof of your mouth is still sun burnt from the weekend!

Can you put that on a poster?

It would be like inscribing "War & Peace" on the head of a pin! Not?

Break a leg!

Re: promoting soaring

Oh! And did I mention how peaceful it is out there? (the wife can't make it with her bad knees!)

JUST KIDDING DEAR!!!

How about a title that would say " If the authorities ever find out how much fun we're having it will be controlled, taxed & sold in government outlets!"

Re: promoting soaring

Jeesh Merv, your hoggin' all the good stuff.

I like the idea, perhaps a venue, a date and some good RC Soaring folks to show people how its done.

In keeping with my theory, the newbies have to see a goal they can achieve. Soaring (to me) is the most primitive, inexpensive forms of the hobby/sport! Keeping in mind a slope soaring glider holds the RC speed record.

If soaring is seen as a sport, that will draw out some competitive people! IMO

Re: promoting soaring

If you are soaring a powered glider outside a maac site are you branded a renegade? Soaring looks cool kinda like kite flying. Very peaceful.

Re: promoting soaring

How do we atain a 10km goal, and return thermal duration flight all upon a MAAC santioned field to obtain my Gold pin in the Canadian Soaring Society? And yes I have done thermal flights in excess of 1hr,34min, and 11sec (by 1sec!). with a pure winch launch glider.
Dave, I would be more than happy to help promote Thermal gliding. I have done some slope gliding, and the easiest of all electric assist.
Like a sailboat, two masts on a lake equalls a race. Two gliders in the same air is a contest. Two glider pilots on the same field, are friends. Hmmmmm, world peace.
