its very nice to have a controleable unit, then you can turn temp down for doing smaller wire ie SERVO wire, or thicker wire etc etc, or SMD soldering or etc etc etc list goes on.. check out amazon.ca or .com.. the tips are pretty decently priced too! Re: Soldering station debate
the gun in that vid is controlled by the type of tip you use, I kind of like the idea of the manual temp controlled units as you can use the same sized tip at a variable of temps like you stated about small to large wires. He's also using a small tip.
In everything I've seen with a bigger tip and the proper iron, you should be able to just place the tip under the wire and touch the solder to the top and have it wick all the way threw to the bottom towards the heat of the iron.....your not suppose to apply the solder from the tip I've also soldered ec5's no problem using even my wlc100. Not that I've ever tried the torch method, but i think i like the idea of the iron method for it more/

Then that tinned wire is jigged to be in direct contact with the tinned battery connector and a quick touch of the iron, doing the same method of melting a bit of solder right at the junction of the tip and wire to get heat transfer started, gets the both of them liquid again quite fast and joined well, with no cold solder joints.

Re: Soldering station debate
reading this thread with interest .. I see no reference to flux here ! I was taught that it doesn't just provide a clean connection, it is a wetting agent and assists both in the wicking action and the heat transfer. Perhaps I was misled but it was a certification course.

Re: Soldering station debate
Soldering for the amount of time you have Jason, you will know there is a great deal more to soldering than a physical connection. It's also not just a case of connected or not connected. There is a full range from high resistance open to best possible conductivity. I do not depend on solder core to handle flux needs. For me, it's like mixing paint primer with finish coat and calling it a day
