Why Robot Wars!?

For the the same reason some of us Combat Flyers say:
"RIBBON! ..... WE DON'T NEED NO STINKEN RIBBON!"

Nuker and Fodder ..... would you agree?

Nony,
I sent in an application to Robotica and actually made it past the first round of selections... But then I realised it was going to cost me two grand to build something reasonably competitive, and then maybe it would last all of 10 minutes for some bashing fun.

I decided that my money was better suited buying a turbine, so I put that money towards my Wren MW54!

Thats a true story!

If it was not so darn expensive to buy the motors, controllers, etc, etc and the competitions werent so far away I'd do it. But RC combat planes sounds a lot more interesting!

Parts

Indeed it will cost some serious $$ to make something worth competing with. I have a lot on my plate right now but I do intend to build something one day just for fun. Where I work, the Maintenance guys throw out a lot of stuff that's like gold to me! All sorts and shapes of air cylinders that I have refurbished, electric motors, gear reduction boxes, hydraulic pumps, etc.! Somedays it's like a gold mine in their scrap bin! LOL! A lot of this stuff will come in handy for the project someday!
I used to have this awesome toy robot when I was a little kid and it would be so cool to make a copy of it..........only 800% bigger and meaner!

My 6 year old son thinks it's cool. Need I say more?

I picture driving one of these on the front yard and watch the reaction. I say mount a couple of turbines on it!

At age 13 - where does one get $750 for a robot? Thats a lot of money (bux ) to be spending on something that will get smashed.

When I was 18 I spent $400 designing and building a robot that walked along metal surfaces (controlled by none other than my C64 computer!) and even had to sell my futaba 6 channel radio to fund the project. But, it got me to the Canada wide science fair, that was in Newfoundland that year (1989) and I ended up winning about $800 in awards and got a free trip to NF for two weeks

My mom didnt like the fact that I spent $400 (which was a lot of $$ to me back then) but she was OK after I won a bronze medal and the prize money.

If you are going to build a robot maybe try and do something more creative with it, ie, something for school?
