40% Lanier Edge...
Anyone built one of these old kits? I've got a line on one for the winter and I hear with enough rotary bits and a little bit of time they can end sub 40lbs and be a pretty reasonable airframe.
Any info would be great. I'm an "ARF" guy and thought this would be a good choice to the introduction to "kit" building, and if it goes sideways, i'm not out a ton of cash, just some winter down time anyway... |

Re: 40% Lanier Edge...
even on the more expensive kits the kit is the least expensive part of the build .building is a huge investment ,time & money,so just make sure your are getting something you really want ,I find building rewarding but I have seen people loose intrest when starting a build based on price .more expensive kits give me more sticktoitiveness LOL Roger

Re: 40% Lanier Edge...
Ya, I figured a Kit would give me something to do over the winter and I miss my other Edge. I've got the 40% 55M for IMAC next season and if it takes a little longer than expected, or I get frustrated/bored with the build, I can put it on the back burner for a while.
I picked the Lanier due to the fuse formers all being tabbed and I've seen guys have it rigged in about 1.5-2hrs, which seemed like a reasonable amount of time. I'd also like to put it on a "sensei" style diet to see just how light I could make it, as I've heard if they get built stock out of the box they're 40+lbs. Thanks for the insight Roger... Ryan. |

Re: 40% Lanier Edge...
well... I picked the kit up on Friday, sat up in Edmonton for the weekend with my 9th IMAC contest of the Year as a "no-fly" weekend. Still was a fun weekend and a good contest. Next year will be better... or I'm gonna just head back to 3D land and just play in IMAC for a little change here and there.
I started the build on this one tonight. I had originally read on FG, that some of the kits were "shorted wood" towards the end of the production run. I, unfortunately, got one of those kits. I am missing F5, F6 so far, and will do a full inventory tomorrow or weds. I'm sure there's not much interest in a real "build thread" for this ol' tank with Trev's awesome thread running... but i'll post pics here and there for anyone interested. I'll probably see how many of his "techniques" I can use in lightening this one, although i'm not going to go overboard as it's my FIRST kit... ever. Yes - That's a door i'm using as my "flat" surface. I picked it up at HD tonight for $30 as my table was pretty warped. Who needs Art and Photos on the wall of your living room, when you've got plans that will take up that space! (yes, I've set up a build table in my "dining room" just outside the kitchen. I think if i built this plane in the spare room of this house, i'd never get it out of there. I'd have to knock the wall out... At $500 I couldn't pass the opportunity to try building... I'm going to see if I can keep this build on the "budget" side. I have 10 8611a's without a home, a PE Pro, 6014 FASST, a bunch of SF Equalizer 3Ds and other SF goodies from a full season of contests (they let you qualify for door prizes if you pay your reg fee and still don't fly - lucky me.) I'm thinking about doing the DA150 on RE3s, but I'm not sure yet, as RE3's aren't really a budget pipe. It might work out cheaper to run the 170 on stock mufflers, but i'll figure that out in the next little while. Unless anyone else has PowerPlant suggestions? I was thinking that from a budget standpoint, the DLE222 might be interesting, but I don't think I could commit to it on their first run. |
