Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

Well instead of just diving in like I did on my first F-16, I've been holding off so that the new tech turbines could be released. Well that has finally happened but I didn't expect so many of them to appear. Can I get the thoughts of the members here on which I should invest in and the reasons? I am aiming for a very light bird as my Tamjets F-16 should come in around 17-20 pounds wet (this is an estimate right now...). My first FEJ F-16 came in at a gross 29-30 pounds wet so this should be much better all around.

Kingtech K80F (17.5 Pounds Thrust)
Length 255mm (10 inches)
Width 96mm (3.78 inches)
Weight 1304g (2.8 Pounds)
-----
Jetcat P-100RX (22.5 Pounds Thrust)
Length 245mm (9.55 inches)
Width 97mm (3.78 inches)
Weight 1050g (2.3 Pounds)
-----
Jetmunts VT80 (18 Pounds Thrust)
Length 227mm (8.5 inches)
Width 90.5mm (3.56 inches)
Weight 950g (2.1 Pounds)

Thanks guys. I have to pull the trigger soon but I've been debating this in my head for months.

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

Obviously the lighter the better but all of those manufacturers weigh differantly so that may not be the most accurate.
Another thing to consider is fuel burn there isn't much capacity on the lil f16 I believe. The vt80 seems a good choice because of there advertised weight but check the fuel burn on it. I think the k80 would be a shoehorn fit too. Also keep in mind you took a p60 out you may need a larger pipe to go with the bigger blow you want to install I would consult Tam on that.

Food for thought.

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

a Rabbit 100 would have more power to weight than anything you have listed. Although it's the same output as a P-100, it's smaller and lighter.

If you like Jets Munt, the merlin 100 is same size, weight, power as Rabbit but, without the lifetime warranty.

Another one in the same class is the wren 100

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

I didnt add the Rabbit 100 to the choice as I cant justify an extra 800 bucks just to get a few more pounds of thrust. Even the P100 is a tough cell because of the extra cost for very little benefit. Kev had it right that I dont think she carries a ton of fuel as is so using that extra go juice might be an issue?

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

Of those three, the best bang for buck to me is the VT-80. It's a bit lighter and probably better on fuel. The K 80's are pigs on fuel. Super reliable tho. Both use the same electronics mfr so gsu operation will be similar.

The jetcat puts out more but costs more too. Ireland somewhere there's an engine guide coming out soon.....

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

Only think I'll add to the above is that I believe the VT-80 had an abnormally high residual thrust (minimum thrust at idle). It looks to have improved, but it is still at 1.0lb, which is on the higher side for that physical size of engine.

Baseline for comparison, the PST-600 and Wren clones tended to have around 0.5lb. A JetCat P-80 or 120 (KJ-66 derivatives, still running a 66mm exhaust turbine) had somewhere around 1.0lb to 1.2lb. A P-70 was in the range of 0.7lb as I remember. Most others in the 20-30lb range had residuals between 1.2 and 1.4 max. Having flown a turbine on my hotspot with a high residual, around 1.6-1.8 lb, I can say its was not fun... At times I was certainly risking a perpetual bouncing landing and serious damage to the model from not being able to slow it down well enough. I had inside knowledge of the ECU in that case, and convinced the manufacturer to lower the idle speed to resolve the issue.

Keep this in mind if you ever plan to put an engine in a slippery jet, max thrust is not the only thrust to worry about.

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

Thanks everyone. Great info.

Lordy!! That explains why I was kind of dumbfounded when I couldn't get my Falcon 120 to slow down like it had with the PST 600. I had to land much faster which caught me off guard when I was using the K80.

Kelly you've flown a very similar F-16 for years...which one would you recommend? And Paul do you have any idea where I could find the engine guide that is coming out? Will it be posted online or at least have a digital version?

Re: Please help me decide...narrowed it down.

rcjets has a guide in it but may not have the new burners in it yet.
Kelly's jet has a p70 in it he also flew with a pst600 before putting p70 in
i believe he also changed pipes for the p70 too

There is also the Wren Super Sport.

I happen to have a NIB engine for sale. Rated at 18 1/2 lbs. puts out slightly more.
