fuselage jig

Hi guys, I was hoping that you might be able to help me. I've built a few planes now, and I allways seem to have trouble with keeping the fuse straight, and true, after the glue dries, it just doesnt seem to be right. I have heard people talking about the jigs they have built, so I would like to know if you guys can share some ideas, or tips, on how to build a jig, or even just some pointers on how to keep the fuse on the straight and true side. Any info you might have, would be a big help.. as allways, thank you in advance....Joey....

fuse jig

RCM had plans many moons ago for a simple fuse jig
use a piese of 3/4 " ply, scribe a grid on the surface,
At strategic intervals, drill 1/4" holes along the edges on the grid,
you make up many brakets I used 1/4" lite ply and 1/4" spruce spacers
I made my brackets 4"high x 6" long
I then used 5" carriage bolts through the holes, through the bracket and a falt washer and wing nut to hold the works together.
you line the formers up on the grid, set the fuse sides in and tighten everything up.

might not work to well for really big older style (WWI) aircraft
been using it for about 20 years now - on 40 - 60 size stuff.

Fuse jig

Joey,

I also have used the jig that craigk describes and it was very useful. The basic design could be modified easily to accomodate lager models.

I have an 'Adjusto-Jig' (but have yet to use it )

I generally make my own jigs depending on the construction type.

Keel construction is the easiest to jig straight, box construction I find the most difficult. I generally use 90 degree stanchions and screw these to a an old door and fasten the sides at strategic points using clamps, rubber bands, clothespins etc.

Another method that works well for me is to build an interior insert that fits in/around fuse formers. This insert is aligned and fastened to a table and main formers clamped to it before sides/stringers are attached.

Many plans use the "line up the sides at the tail" approach for box type construction, this never worked well for me, I prefer to line up the former attachment points via the above insert method.

Hope this helps.

Jim.
