Re: New Design Build thread
Thanks everyone for the kind words. . Ken, I checked out your build thread on the Gold Finch. Very nice work! I bet that design flys as good as it looks. Yes the tab/slot design really simplifies construction. I have to thank Carl Goldberg for showing me that technique. I've built a few of his models in my day, and I was thoroughly impressed with every one.
I too, am building this plane as a kind of big brother to a smaller design of mine. It will probably look a bit different though. Here is a couple of pictures of my first design and the small brother of this aircraft. I called it the Scarlet Arrow. It was powered with a .46 Thunder Tiger and man would it move. It had an amazing roll rate which was toned down with expo for very easy docile landings. I designed it with a very wide wheel base which made ugly landings look good. I had the aircraft for about 6 yrs. It had at least 1000 flights on it. I flew it with skies too. I loved this little airplane. Unfortunatly I lost her last year due to a battery connection failure. It was a very sad day indeed . I will probably build another some day. I just want to get into gas power right now. Oh ya, I forgot I also won first place in sportsman class precision flying contest with this little beauty. |

Re: New Design Build thread
Getting back to the build. I cut out all of the plywood parts today. I will probably be cutting a foam turtle deck for this aircraft and sheeting it with 1/16 balsa. I may cut the front top cowling from the cockpit forward also.
Here is a picture of the plywood parts cut. To have a laser cutter would be bliss Thanks again for looking at this thread and any comments you have. |

Re: New Design Build thread
Hi all,
Well today, after a well needed clean-up, I managed to get a little work done. It's amazing how cluttered things can get when your building. . Tools, saw dust, wood shavings. It gets to the point where you just have to stop and clean-up . My problem, and I'm sure is a lot of peoples problem, is TIME. Time just seems to fly by. And contrary to what I was taught, I never leave enough time to clean . I did get the rest of the slots cut in the fuse sides and doublers. Then I put things together so far for a trail fit. You may notice that the nose is a bit long. I left it long to fine tune the engine placement for proper CofG. I will build- up the tail, then mount the engine to the firewall and then place the firewall where I need it for proper CofG. |

I will attach a few more pics. The first is the Scarlet doing a high performance Take-off . The second is the Scarlet and my second design the Crane. The Crane was more of an experiment. I learned how to plot airfoils. So this aircraft has one of those airfoils. I was going for a STOL performing aircraft. The wing span was 60", length 47", and weight 8lbs. I made this aircaft heavy on purpose with the idea that it would handle stronger crosswinds. The airfoil more than handled the extra weight. It was a very sucessful design. Unfortunatly I lost this one also. The horizontal stab gave way. I dropped something on the one side and cracked it .I thought I repaired it well enough. But...DOH!! I also found a bit of a design flaw in my design of the stab. I revised it on following models. Anyway I'm going on and on, here is the pics Last edited by McFlyer; 06-12-2010 at 10:35 PM. |

Re: New Design Build thread
Back to the build, I cut the turtle deck and sheeted it. It is weghted in the foam saddle right now waiting for the glue to dry. Unfortunatly I didn't take any photos of the process. I will take some of the finished peice.
I then worked on the wings. I managed to get the ailerons cut out and I glued on the hinge Balsa. Here is some pictures of that process. Again, Thanks to anyone who is following this build thread. |

Re: New Design Build thread
I did alot of work on the wings today. I shaved and sanded the ailerons and hinge balsa on the wings. I beveled the aileron on this wing.

Re: New Design Build thread
It was then time to cut out the servo bay. I also routed a hole from the root of the wing to the servo bay using a 1/4" aircraft drill, then a 5/16" rod.
For the servo mount, I will glue some hardwood rails to the 1/16" aircraft ply, then using #2 screws I will screw the 1/16" ply to the built up mounting rails. Now to do the other wing... That can wait until tommorow. Time to relax for awhile. Last edited by McFlyer; 06-12-2010 at 10:30 PM. |
