Hi Trevor
I would sure love to see a video of you covering the Extra, I bet you have your shoes and socks off so you can grip the monokote. Awesome scheme on Jacks Extra can't wait to see a photo of the plane together.
Hope the move goes smoothly and you can get back to building, enjoy looking in to see progress on builds. No chance that move could be further to west I think certain westeners would welcome you and your family with open arms!

Cheers Don

Hey Don!! Thanks for the compliments and best wishes!!! I've never tried gripping the Monokote with my feet - thanks for the tip! LOL!!!

I'm sure some day the company will ask me to move to Edmonton or Calgary... only a matter of time IMO!! I'd love to spend some time out there and fly with all you folks!!

Cheers

Trev

Well, the covering iron is packed up in storage - THE COVERING IS DONE

I got all the hinge lines sealed tonight (top and bottom of the ailerons and elevators) and the checkers that span the hinge lines have been brought together for a cleaner look!

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

The build is 99% done and the hatch/cowl/wheel pants/cuffs & pilot have all been prep'd, primed and sanded to 400 grit and go off to the airbrusher on Monday!!!

Just a bunch of odds and ends to do to finish off the details.

First on the list was to seal the motorbox to prevent air into the fuselage. I've tried all the tricks and I've found the best to be to use clear Monokote - it sticks like mad to the plywood and still shows off that beautiful Carden WOOD!!

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

Next...

The canister tunnel for the RE3 tuned pipes is made from 1/16" balsa and coated on the pipe-side with epoxy resin. I've been reading lots of reports where these tunnels tend to crack over time due to the vibrations of the big DA170s.

So, to prevent this from ever happening, I cut out pieces of 0.5oz fiberglass cloth (same lightweight stuff I glassed the hatch with) and laminated them over the tunnel sheeting with ThunderBoltRc Laminating Epoxy. It's clear, so it doesn't yellow the nice wood!!

Total weight added was only 1.3oz and it's now garranteed to last the lifetime of the plane, regardless of vibrations. When it is fully cured tomorrow, I'll trim off some of the flashing.

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

Next on the list - reinforcing some of the critical motorbox joints!!

I've seen lots of folks use triangular balsa stock to reinforce the tabs on the motorbox, but I like to use 2mm diameter CF rod instead. Because the rod is round, I find it fits in the corner better and creates a stronger bond - plus it weighs nothing!!

All the m-box tabs are reinforced and the fuel tank saddles. Why the saddles? Let's say Jack pulls a 10G manoeuvre. With 2L of fuel in the tank, that's 4.6lbs, so these saddles will be trying to resist 10x4.6lbs.!!!!

Better safe than sorry here!!

After the way I`ve seen you wring out that JTEC Edge, I think I should be doing the testing for 20G`s!!!!

Don`t worry Jack - this plane is overbuilt - I guarantee you won`t be able to break it (in the air that is!!)

We`ve got a flight to catch this afternoon to your neck of the woods for a full weekend of house-hunting, so no progress expected this weekend!
