Approximate cost of that entire paint job will be just shy of $7000.00
Tank?? What tank?

I have done TE thickening (flare's or whatever) for many years ('05 was the first time I did it), it does exactly as Brent mentioned. Just like adding expo. Some will say they do other things, but I think that's mostly just BS, the main thing is reducing neutral sensitivity.

The reason you do it on the rudder at least from a pattern perspective....is rudder is a very non-linear surface, you usually have a fair amount of deflection for certain aspects of flight (KE loops, Rolling loops, KE 8's, KE cubans etc. all stuff in pattern as the maneuver creation is a little more wide open to creative minds), and next to no throw in point rolls....on a modern pattern model it takes only a few degrees of deflection to fly on knife edge, the rudders are as effective as an elevator.

Soooo you end up with a shitload of expo on the rudder, which makes it hard to fly since the surface is really non-linear, by adding the flare you can reduce the expo (usually by more than half depending on the size of flare) and get the feeling right. Too much flare and the rudder is dead as a doornail at neutral and you wont get along with the airplane.

Not sure its as much a benefit in IMAC as they don't have the wild KE stuff that pattern does.

Doing it on aileron and elevator is pointless because those surfaces don't suffer from the same issue as the rudder.

PS: Making the TE really thick (3/8"-1/2" or so) does the exact same thing. I have seen flare on a pattern plane that was about 1" wide.

Re: 124" Carden PRO - Carbon Fiber Edition - BBT

Trev, do you embed the tow in a groove or is it just glued on the surface?

Re: 124" Carden PRO - Carbon Fiber Edition - BBT

Thanks for the explanation Chad - makes a ton of sense now!!!!

Hopefully you can give Brent's plane a good beating and tell us what you think of it. I'm seriously considering doing a PRO for myself this summer and will likely do the rudder flair also

Cheers

I make a groove in the foam. I have a 1/4" thick stick that is wrapped with sandpaper and I just run it along a straightedge to create the 1/4" wide groove by about 1/32". It only takes a few steady swipes and the voila!!

You want the groove just deep enought that the CF doesn't stick above and cause a ridge in the sheeting after layup. I have cut the cross-section of these grooves a number of times and the Ultimate Glue fills in any voids perfectly!!

Here's a few pictures that sorta show the grooves!!...
