Wow, when you get the fuse covered, let me know and I will come and pick it up.
I need one of these. Very nice.

Re: Finishing Thread - AMR Weddell Williams - BBT

This morning I got the bottom of the fuse sanded round and got the red on the tail. The front half of the fuse will be black with a swoop onto the red tail... I'll start into that soon! Then it'll be a few days to prep for the sides and top

Re: Finishing Thread - AMR Weddell Williams - BBT

Got the bottom finished tonight and gear / cover installed!

Now the big task of making the top and side fuse sheeting round with no ridges or flat spots since the front will be all black and eventually glossy, so anything other than perfectly round and smooth will really show

Likely 5 or 6 evenings of work before the next update, since I remember this step when I built the Airtractor last year.

Re: Finishing Thread - AMR Weddell Williams - BBT

I took a break from the sanding/shaping of the top sheeting and applied a little red to the tail

What was the technique that you used to lay the black over the red?

Brian.. Absolutely no technique at all, LOL!! I just ironed it down overtop. The glue on the Solartex is crazy stuff and I guess all the fibers and the weave act as sipes for all the air to escape, because there is 0 bubbles ironing Solartex over Solartex.

The more I play with this Solartex, the more I love it It's gotta be the easiest, must stretchable/shrinkable covering out there Completely user friendly. It's near impossible to get a wrinkle in the stuff.

If you notice on today's pictures, that multiple angle, concave curve on the LE of the vertical stab was a breeze to do! Ultracote would have been near impossible and Monokote would have been doable but with a ton of cursing and 400+ degree heat. The Solartex was literally a 5min job.

Re: Finishing Thread - AMR Weddell Williams - BBT

I used to use the Super Shrink Coverite that was uncoloured until it was withdrawn from the market 5 or 6 years ago. It was thinner and lighter than solartex so seams were less noticable. The bonding properties to wood were excellent and I think it cost about half as much as solartex. The downside was it hade to be painted and primed. My stearman was the first plane I covered with Solartex and I remember being impressed with its bonding abilities. The Wedell-Williams is the right project to use fabric and you are doing a great job. JR
