Halon or CO2 for Gas Turbine fire extinguishers?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hi,

I always keep a 5LB CO2 fire extinguisher handy for any turbine fires, if I finally use my 5 pounder, it will be due for a refill. I just got a line on a couple of Halon 1211 extinguishers. Does anyone know if they'll work the same and save my turbine when the crap hits the fan?

Thanks to all!

petertech99h,

Halon1211 is fine to use on your turbines. I have used it on full sized aircraft fires before and works better than traditional ABC extinguishers. The Halon doesn't leave corrosive residue behind, Halon is commonly used in the electronics industry for electrical fires as well.

Halon is fine. Just can't legally refill. Co2 are relatively cheap to refill if you do discharge them. Other issue I have heard is that Halon is an issue to cross the border with if you do attend events in the US.

From what I remember being told quite a while ago Halon was on the endangered species list due to the fact it is an ozone damaging compound. The other problem was within enclosed spaces it had the tendency to create an additional hazard to occupants.

I have been out of aviation for a while now and that may no longer be accurate. Be interesting to know the latest regs.

My fire extinguisher is Halotron, a derivative of Halon and is legal. I've used it on a turbine plane and it works great. Like Paul said above, CO2 is much cheaper to refill.

Halon is still used in aviation, but is regulated. All the aircraft in the fleet I work in have Halon fire suppression systems. Don't use it in a confined space, you will find breathing very difficult!

Technically any gas that will displace oxygen is an asphixiant and is dangerous in a confined space CO2 included.

Re: Halon or CO2 for Gas Turbine fire extinguishers?

If you have access to Halon, great! It has some advantages over CO2 (for our applications). The containers are smaller, and easier to move around; They have pressure guages so you are aware of contents remaining; and it seems to be more effective than CO2. Having used both, I've found that a puff of Halon is as effective as a blast of CO2.

I personnally have a 10lb CO2 which I got from Josh at JA Evans Fire Protection Inc. Very nice guy with good prices and willing to deliver within reason. He said the refills are cheap and easy to do. His number is 416-801-2763.

Re: Halon or CO2 for Gas Turbine fire extinguishers?

Thanks Guys!

The halons I'm looking at are cheap NOS stock, taking up space, so I'll take'm
but I'll keep my CO2 for refills for sure! I just needed to be sure there's no side
affects. I know dry chemical extinguishers are killer for turbines, wanted to be sure!

Thanks again!
