I realize this is now over 20 years old, but it always struck me as one of the best visual shots to start an aviation movie ever. It also give you some idea of how large this airplane really is:

Re: Best Intro Ever

I found one hiding in a WWII era hangar while there doing skydivers and cannot describe how immense this plane is.

they're restoring one at the ns aviation museum at the stanfield int. airport here. used to belong to an airline in newfoundland and tried a short landing on a small lake , running off onto the shore where it sat for years being vandalized.

they've been working on it for a few years. the wings are pretty banged up and sitting outside the museum.

newfoundland had some of them for fire fighting and while growing up I remember one of them landing repeatedly on pictou harbor for water while fighting a fire nearby. that was further back than i care to remember.

Actually, the Catalina was strictly a flying boat, and was not amphibious. The plane shown is the amphibious version, which was called the Canso. You can see the retracted gear on either side of the fuselage.

Re: Best Intro Ever

yes, you are correct. I always though the canso was the canadian name. didn't know the pby had no gear.
