I know it's kind of a late reply, but the old hippodome is not available for flying anymore, do you guys know any other places?

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

Sad news
Past autumn (Sept 2015) I saw people still flying there and get acquainted with one guy. His name is Lorne and he has T-Rex 600.
How did they manage to close it? It looked like public place where anybody could enter.

It was closed around Sept Oct last year, they have signs everywhere saying no RC Aircraft and a security patrolling there from time to time.

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

Hi, guys!
Thanks to Chandler wing450! He has found some place that could be suitable for small park flying.
The field is located between Rue Ducas, Rue Jean Chevalier and Rue Lapierre next to the Aquadome behind the Angrignon Parc.
Exact coordinates:
45°26'13.6"N 73°36'37.4"W
45.437111, -73.610382
Google maps
This field is square 200x200 meter and looks completely unused. It is easy to reach by car or by metro. It is possible to fly small helicopters (up to 450) and hand launch park flyers that doesn’t need runaway.
The disadvantages are that sometimes people cross the field, so it is better to have a companion to warn the pilot about coming people. Also the field is surrounded by private houses. We didn’t face any objection from their side yet, but it is always possible. The property status of the field is unknown.
If anybody needs a companion, please PM me, because I need someone to accompany me there.

Also can anybody check the status of the Namur hyppodrome. Is it still prohibited for flying?

I've checked MAAC regulations about park flying. Opposite to what we were told in some clubs, MAAC website states that MAAC insurance covers park flying. Though it is discouraged but not prohibited as far as all safety measures are taken and property owner or local laws doesn't object this kind of activity. For more details see MAAC Insurance Advisory Group FAQ's
Quote:
15. Public Park flying - Does MAAC insurance cover us when we fly at a public park?
Yes. Park/backyard/on the lake etc. model activities are now covered.
We discourage flying in public parks as we think that there is the potential for serious injury (even with the small park flyers). It is also extremely difficult to keep members of the public and particularly children at safe distances. Excellent organizational skills would be necessary for the safe set up of these sites in order to overcome the drawbacks.

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

Hi Guys!
Is anybody going to fly outside of the clubs this long weekend?
I can’t believe that in the whole city of Montreal I am the only out-of-club non-MAAC flyer?!

I’ve found 2 more possible places for parkfly. Unfortunately both have disadvantages.
1. Parc Jarry. The place is big enough. I don’t thing it is very crowdy early in the morning, but it is anytime in the afternoon. Also, though this parc is 9 km far from the airport the path of the planes is near. And we know that big guys in the sky tend to cut edges and then blame everything on little guys like us.
2. Big field near Parc Jean-Duceppe. I haven’t checked it yet, but it loos OK for parkfly. The disadvantage is that the police station is near. Cops have a very dangerous and nervous work so their reaction could be a little unexpected. The good point if you didn’t come back from the flying filed your wife knows where you are to bring you a pie with your lovely file.

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

I've checked Parc Jean-Duceppe in Rue Molson H1Y 3J8 (45.542509, -73.566923).
The plase is good for small parkfly. Old road through the field can be used as a runaway. There is some parking place in Rue Augustin Frigon. The best point is that the place is not very crowdy.

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

Topic is closed!
Municipal Montreal ByLaws forbids any "motorized scale model" activity in Montreal public parks. Taking a new Transport Canada Interim into consideration no model operation is possible outside of MAAC sanctioned fields in Montreal, QC area.

INTERIM ORDER RESPECTING THE USE OF MODEL AIRCRAFT

BY-LAW CONCERNING THE USE AND PRESERVATION OF REGIONAL
PARKS OF MONTRÉAL RCG 09-029

Quote:
CHAPTER V USER BEHAVIOR AND ACTIVITIES
38. No person may operate motorized scale models or model rockets.

Re: Anyone from Montreal?

Thank you, Chris! You have just closed me the last opportunity to fly.
I'm not going to the same club with "plank-minded protectors on the new order".
