Re: homemade Jet Engings

I purchased the Kurt Schreckling book, "gas turbine engines for model aircraft" some 16 years ago, primarily out of curiosity. It was well before R/C turbojets were considered viable by most R/C enthusiasts. Although I quickly realized it wasn't worth the effort (I'd probably end up with a grenade), the book was an interesting read and gave me a great deal of insight into the basic function and operation of a miniature turbine. By all accounts, Schreckling is considered one of the pioneers of miniature turbine design.

BTW, someone once told me AJC built a Schreckling turnbine....is that true Andrew?

Cheers

Re: homemade Jet Engings

Building a Schreckling turbine really is fairly easy...
Boxley 55 (on RCcanada) and me build and flew several 15 years ago.
Bruce even machined his own diffusers back then.
The issue is to get them balanced properly and have them running reliable and efficient for a longer period of time..

Yes, I still have it. But it was a KJ66 turbine. I have flown it several times as well as many hours bench testing, but currently it is requiring a new turbine wheel fitted. I had it disassembled after nearly 20 hours run time in order to inspect the combustion chamber. I stupidly dropped the shaft with wheel attached onto the concrete shop floor, and bent the shaft slightly, as well as bending a few turbine blades. Will need to turn up a new shaft and fit the new wheel and get it back together some day...

I had the whole thing documented on RCC when I did it, but I think the pictures are long been lost during a server change. The thread might still be there though.

Hi Powerjets,

You actually built several?...That's amazing! My big concern with the early Schreckling design was balance. The handmade plywood compressor and metal plate turbine wheel didn't seem difficult to construct, but, balancing them to get any kind of decent rpm seemed near impossible without precision balancing equipment. I was also not sure about the fuel coil and combustion chamber as my early web research indicated the biggest problem was the excessive heat and fuel needed to get a sustained burn. Hats off to you for your success!

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your reply also. I'll have to look for your KJ66 build thread. I'd be interested in attempting something like that if the plans, compressor and turbine wheels are still available. I'd read that it was a very successful design and made excellent power. Did you adapt an ecu or just experiment with mechanical settings manually to get ideal startup and sustained running?

Thanks
Den

wow! seeing thouse pictures, really seems to take the sting out of what we now pay for Highly advance technologies of todays turbines. Doesnt seem so much all of a sudden.

I know it is a rare thing, but its too bad more jet model flyers have not read about, or have much knowledge of the beginnings of the model engines we today fly, and how they came about.

The several books out by Thomas Kamps, and Kurt Schrekling are very, very interesting reading. Also, joining the GTBA years ago allowed me to read all the back issues of the group and how guys developed engines from Kurt's first engine discussed here through the KJ66, the first WRen 54mm based turbines, etc. It certainly allows a much better understanding of how these turbines came about, and how to treat them & run them. But I think its too much like "school work" to some.. a lot of reading and I spent a lot of time myself to read and try and understand the science behind these engines. But its well worth while if you are really interested.
