Motor overheating issue.
Merry Christmas everyone! I need some help I am either doing something seriously wrong or my equipment is just cheap.
I have a losi 22 2.0 set up for mid motor. Just started racing at my local tracks and I am on a budget so I just have a $60 esc motor combo from China. I have a 3030kv motor which says 13 turns. The manual suggests 28/70 gearing for a 13.5t motor so I'm close. Everywhere I read I see that optimal temp is under 200°f. I just went out for a 6 min run and temperature my motor at 265. I know that's crazy high but it's a cheap motor and I intend on using it until I figure this out. I was just out front of my house doing a few turns and some quick high speed passes. Will more expensive equipment yield better results? A point in the right direction would be great and I'd like to find a solution so that I may pass the help on oneday. Thanks |

Re: Motor overheating issue.
Can you try dropping the motor sprocket gear by 1 or 2 teeth? That might make all the difference. It might affect the top end, but will put a lot less load on the motor, and that will make it run cooler

Re: Motor overheating issue.
I don't do cars but with my aircraft I always use a wattmeter to measure the current draw to see if it is under motor specs. Consideration with your cheaper equipment ,as you say, is that it will not tolerate higher temps vs higher quality ,so your concerns are valid. How is the airflow . Motor may need a heat sink to help. Is it an inrunner or out runner ? A temp of 265 or so is getting pretty hot. Most cheaper motors run about 180 f max if higher the windings may burn out. The higher quality can handle around 200f.

Re: Motor overheating issue.
Make sure the tranny turns smoothly and that there is no binding in any way. Is your gear mesh too tight? If so this can cause excessive heat to the motor by causing more load. Is the slipper and ball diff set right? If either are loose it'll cause damage to them but also allow the motor to rev higher then it should and this also causes heat.

Re: Motor overheating issue.
Yes- smooth running tranny is so important.
I always loosen my motor off and spin the wheels by hand. I find a lot of transmission binding problems that way

Re: Motor overheating issue.
What motor/esc combo is it? Some of the 540 combos are actually 380 motors in finned cans, and will run hotter because they're under more load.
I'd check for binding the drivetrain, if there isn't any then drop a couple teeth on the pinion. If it's overheating that badly I'd go down 3-4 teeth to start.
