I need opinions on this slot cutter. Is it really that much more accurate or quicker than a knife that is is worth the money? Pro's/cons?

Here's my opinion. It's note worth the money to me!

I bought one, cut maybe 20 slots, then kaaaput!!

Got another for a Christmas gift. Guess what, , , 15 slots, , , and DEAD!

There's a nylon "cam-wheel" inside. Believe me 'cause I took them both apart. It's a very poor design, and should have been some sort of metal.

It's a very soft low budget nylon, totally destroyed!

I called Great Planes. Spoke to a lady who didn't really care. She said they were aware of this premature failure, but there are no repair parts.

That's the way they come from China (I think she said)

Offered to buy a dozen of these cam parts as a special order, she said no.

My opinion of course . . .

I wouldn't buy one. Built a plane for a friend of mine who had just bought one and asked me to try it out. It worked okay (and just okay) on balse but this particular plane had a spruce rudder post and the slotter would not cut a slot in this material.

I've used mine on at least 20 planes. Through spruce and balsa. I have the electric version. I did notice that after about 15 planes, the blades got dull but for $8 I was back in business.

I can't speak to someone else's experience but that was mine.

I didn't know there was any other version than electric. IF so, then does the eclectric one have a different type of cam in it that makes it last longer?

I borrowed one from a friend this weekend. It works great. I'd recommend having one!

I agree, they work very well. A friend has had one for about 8 years with no problems.

Hey Lash drive to Elmira and see one up close. Had mine for a few years now replaced the blades a couple of times. Find it way more accurate than a knife safer too. I have only used it for the cloth type hinges don't have a blade for nylon hinges. Yes mine is an electric one also, not battery powered

I might try and stop in on the weekend. I'll phone first and maybe we can have a look at the field too.
