I followed this up a little farther now it is monday. Both surface, and marine receivers will bind to the surface transmitters. As for my disired configuration, of a stick for the steering, or tiller (rudder) I would have to use an air receiver such as one of my park flyer (AR6110e) receivers. Which is totally fine, and legal. According to Great Hobbies Tech dept.
Hope this may help others with the same question. -Dale-
Hi Dale:

Glad to help. Using the 2.4g air rx would be my suggestion. Not like you are going to interfere with anything.

I didn't like those wheeled tx's either!

Chris

Re: 2.4Ghz, for surface

Well, according to Spectrum there is a separate receiver for Marine applications. MR3000 using DSM2, listing all the air transmitters from the 12X, down to modules. Also the upper line of surface transmitters.
They must of realized that a lot of modellers still like stick transmitters.

That said, the same would hold true for all manufacturers.
