Wankel Engines

Has anyone ever ran one of these wankel engines? Andrew advised that I should have 25% oil. Do they four cycle and peak like a regular two stroke or do I have to use a tach. Do I have to put on cooling baffles to keep it cool?

Re: Wankel Engines

They peak like crazy, need lots of oil but no cooling jacket just keep motor well out in the open for cooling.
Cliff, get back to me on the 30 I think you have made a mistake buddy

Got one here, ran it lots! Only spiked my fuel to 20% oil - is that what caused the funny wear marks where the tip seals run Andrew?
These engines really don't sound like a 2 sroke or a 4 stroke, it's a sound you just have to get used to when tuning. Play with it! Doesn't take long to get the feel of lean vs rich!
You will also be amazed at how much fuel it goes through! These engines are just self propelled fuel pumps!
Mine always ran slobbering rich at part throttle, no low end mixture adjustment, only main needle so transition was a bit sluggish. Fixed it by drilling a tiny air bleed hole on the front of the carb. Excellerates like a Ferrari now!
Had the best luck with low pitch props eg. APC 10/3. these engines don't have any low speed torque so low pitch allows them to get up into there power band. 16000 +
Hope this helps.

Re: Wankel Engines

This engine will get up to 17,000 RPm with a 9X4. Plenty of oil, mainly castor oil is needed for the Apex seals and the rotor face. The newer 4.9 PI doesn't recommend as much oil due to the different metalurgy of the later model.

Re: Wankel Engines

Controlliner, RPMs sound about right, mine turned 16800 on the 10/3. Did you run your's much? Ever open it up to look for wear?
Had a lot of trouble keeping the muffler tight, always loose on landing eventually stripped the screw heads out trying to get it tight enough.
Oh! & you can tell when you are aproaching a "too lean" condition by muffler temp. It will be smoking after it's shut off!
Mine wouldn't start hand propping, required a quick touch of a starter. I think that's normal.

Re: Wankel Engines

Ran it enough to be disgusted with the fuel economy and traded it out. Never disassembled it, I believe it is not good to do so after it has been broken in. The front and back combustion chamber face plate bolts need to be installed with exact and even torque. If not the engine will never run right again.

Re: Wankel Engines

One comment on the fuel stats mentioned would be that these can be compared to a 1-Rotor, 3-Cyl motor, so you are roughly feeding a 3 jug motor here. The need to keep the rotor and seals lubed and the high RPM can't be helping economy either.

Re: Wankel Engines

That sounds like an awful lot of RPM's. Can you run a bigger prop as to get the RPM's down to about 14,000? There was always a controversy as to the actual displacement. The prop shaft turns more than one revolution for every full cycle of the rotor.
