define "best". What do you need this motor to do and what is your budget? If we knew more, we could better assist you.

Its almost impossible to use horsepower ratings as a criteria. Some manufacturers fudge them with small props and other means,
and most serious producers content themselves with rpm performance and even then the prop used plays a big part.
What you intend to use the engine for is more important since factors such as easy starting, smooth idle and transition, play a bigger part than all out power many times.

5 HP Engines

I have a DA 50R that weighs 3 pounds. It spins a PT carbon 22X8 prop @ 7200 RPM. Starts very well and is always reliable.

The 17 pounds of thrust you talked about seems a little light for 5 HP. My setup has around 28 pounds in an 18 pound Yak 54.

That is my experience with this engine. Others may have good luck with BME etc.

Sorry guys, your right application is critical, I have a Hanger 9 Ultra Stick Lite 120 and I just want to have the most power possible in a very light engine to do 3D flying.

120 size aircraft like this which is also lite could use around 30cc with no problem. For 3d stuff I would go a little larger. Makes and brand to me is not much of a problem. When you check most of them you will find a cylinder setup from other sources. They add the crank case and other parts. Some manufacturers make there own complete which is a dedicated engine for aircraft. Then they change ignition timing, port timing which gives you the extra power along with matched up parts for a better fit. Used to call it blueprinting and some manufacturers go the extra mile.
Guy's can comment to help you out but this is mostly what I see. Easy starting, swing a club with good rpm.
John

engine

Take a look at the Evolution 35cc gas engine...might work for your application. Also have a look at a ZDZ40 and similar.

A guy at our club flew one of those with a Quadra 35 or so. It almost hovered as far as I can recall. It was a nice flying plane though.
