Question Seams on covering

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Is there anything I can put on the seams where my covering (Black Baron) intersects?
Example..........leading edge, top is blue, bottom is silver.

Something that would stop the edges from lifting?

All the other planes I have done, have all been one color at the seams, so I just made sure I overlapped a bit.

Clear covering? Some form of clear paint?, etc

Re: Seams on covering

The best thing to do is still overlap. You just make sure the darkest color is over the lightest one.

The CA glue trick is the answer.

Re: Seams on covering

You want to be careful with the CA glue as it is going to leave some white "stains" on the covering.

Re: Seams on covering

I use a product known as Cover Grip. It's water based so quite inert and is compatible with most materials. It's heat activated so, you simply paint it on with a brush before covering. In the situation you're describing I apply it to the frame before the one colour goes on then, before applying the next sheet, I apply it (lightly) to the the overlap area.

This also works very well when joining sheets on glass ( prior to applying to the frame ), I simply apply a thin coat to the top (not adhesive side) of the overlap area before joining with the iron (a superior method imho).

Trim solvent is recommened by covering manufacturers but, I find this difficult to work with and the resulting bond can easily result in a a weakness (read wrinkles) when it comes time to shrink the covering.

CA? No way! Not only the whiteness aforementioned but also a crystaline hard lumpy mess you'll be cursing if the aircraft survives long enough to warrant a later re-covering job. My Ultimate is testament to this....

Re: Seams on covering

If the covering is applied properly you don't need anything. If the covering does lift at the seam, clean with alcohol and reheat.

Hi Shotgun:

I can't speak for all plastic type heat shrink covering material, but all of the ones that I work with - Monokote, Econokote, Ultracoat, Hobby City brand etc. will clean up very nicely with Acetone. When covering on my aircraft, especially on nitro models, begins to lift and won't respond to re-ironing, I always use CA followed by an Acetone wipe down. I have yet to develop problems with white staining and the seam will never again let go.
