Not sure if this hads been covered but a few months ago I was at scotts house and he showed me his speed heli he had been custom building. Well it finally flew and did something like 150mph.

He sent me the video link and thought I would share it. Hoepfully this hasnt already been discussed.

Re: Scott Gray Speed HEli

What I find very interesting is the dropped tail, clutch driven main rotor design. In order to achieve such high speeds, the rotor needs to be angled forward more than usual, or it would bring the tail boom up and create a lot of extra drag. Many of today's helicopters have angled main rotor shafts so that when in forward flight, they present the least amount of surface to the oncoming air. By doing the same with that model, they have kept the tail down and in the slipstream of the fuselage. Most 3D helicopters have a simple 90 degree boom to main shaft angle and have the skids parallel to the boom. Little thought or concern is given to high speed flight unlike that helicopter design. It appears to me that the main rotor is separate from the tail either by the clutch or the rotors are driven by independent drive systems. Thanks for the post.

Re: Scott Gray Speed HEli

Scott's main blade is angled 10-15 degrees forward, from what I remeber. This causes the tail to appear down when hovering so it is level in high speed flight. The whole drive system was custom made. The tail is also motor driven (interdependently of main motor) not belts or shafts.
