Re: Leaving your anttena up or down

Each person has an opinion.
A lot will depend on how you hold your radio.
The thing to remember, is, that although the 2.4ghz antenna is (supposed) to be omnidirectional, it puts out a much stronger signal at 90 degrees to it's length.
So, if you hold your transmitter horizontally, you'll want the antenna bent to keep it at right angles to your aircraft. If you hold it vertically, you'll want it straight to keep it at right angles to your aircraft. If you point the antenna at your aircraft, it'll recieve a weaker signal.

Re: Leaving your anttena up or down

Hanging down limp isn't so good.
Stiff and straight is better
Pointing up is best.

Wait... We are talking antenna's right??...

Re: Leaving your anttena up or down

I was told that the 2.4gig signal radiates from the antenna in the shape of a donut. ( see attached pic) Now you can easily understand that the signal is weak at the tip of the antenna but very strong along the sides.
You always want to have the strongest signal towards the aircraft. For most people the antenna needs to be bent so the side of the antenna is facing the aircraft. The last thing you want is to have the tip pointing at the plane.

Personally I fly with the antenna bent at 90 degrees but off to the right along the top of the TX. Never had a issue. I don't bend it straight up as I have seen too many antennas snapped off when placed into a TX case and the lid accidentally falls closed on it. I wish radio manufacturers would do away with the external antenna and put it inside the TX. TX handle would be a good spot. That plastic antenna is all smoke and mirrors as the actual antenna is just a piece of coax wire inside the plastic shell.

Re: Leaving your anttena up or down

I agree with you Chris. We all hold our transmitters differently so the rule of thumb is don't point the antenna tip at the plane. My antenna is at 90 degrees. I use the flight logger and I have excellent results.
