Are Competetive Fun/Flys active in your local area's ? Years ago these contest were a regular thing everywhere. The Kingston club just celebrated it Annual 30th Fathers day Fun/fly this past weekend. I think this is the only club in our entire zone G still thats still doing this stuff.

I had great time this weekend flying my cheap ARF Model tech Majic too first place in Sportsman. I do wonder why this kind of flying seems to be in declin e.

So lets hear what-up with this part of our hobby?

Ajax has been very active in this area, in fact, I flew in one 2 weeks ago ... giving way to combat and "social" (non competitive) funflies of late, but still very much alive....

A competetive contest is one in wich everyone takes a turn at flying specific events of pilot skill to find out who is #1,#2 or 3rd. Normal events would be a bomb drop, limbo, Can-Can. etc.

This type of flying should be Classified as a FUN/FLY not what everyone now calls open flying events that all seem to be called FUN/FLY's these days.

A Real Fun/Fly is great way too improve your pilot skills and have fun doing it. Being forced to be precise improves your skills for sure.

My question is are these Fun/Fly's contest still alive/well in your Zone/town etc?

Vancouver Island.........check out www.pdqflyers.com if you are headed this way. We still have events and not just fly-ins. We have guys in their 70's here that can whip that Rolly's butt back there in Kinston, doing the inverted limbo with one hand tied behind their back. Your's too Gord.

Ken, I have been attending events in our zone for many years now. This year was the first time we had a real "fun fly" - at the Soo event, and it was a blast! I have in the past brought this up with our club but it never happened.

I know all the guys in the Soo had a great time, young to older, and it was a lot more interesting than just boring holes in the sky in my and other's I spoke to opinion.

There seems to be some sort of negativity from some modelers when the term "competition" comes up but I cannot see why? Its just a good time, flying, but with some sort of purpose. I hope to see more of this stuff in the years to come.

I would clasify that as an OxyMoron!

How can a FunFly be competitive?

What models designs are they flying!

So what planes make the best FUN/FLY models then?

At the Annual Kingston Fathers day Fun/Fly it basically breaks down like this:

JR: Any Trainer will do!

Sportsman: No mixing requires a built-up fuse: Model Tech Majic ARF
: Florio Flyer etc
: Not for Sale

Expert: Menace and Minus designs rule mainly as the model work well with the AMA guys and NCFFA contest they fly.
Power normal is OS. 32 FX with moosecan mufflers wood props

Bad classification my friend.
Funflies are quite a lot of fun, especially when the 'peanut gallery' gets involved.

Have you really missed the fun of watching/particiapating in balloon breaking, egg drops, limbos, carrier landings etc. etc.?

One fun competition was having half a dozen sheets of depron, tape, and an electic power system. Teams to design their own plane, 4 or 5 in the team. comp is, who gets up first, pylon race with a loop down the straightaway, each member of the team has to do a lap. Then combat till there is one left. You can repair it and throw it up again. Funny what a loose motor will do to the front end of a depron plane, or fly without a motor I'll see if I can get one of the guys to put up a picture of the models.
