Painting a foamy

What aerosol paint can I use on a foamy that will not affect the foam adversely?

Re: Painting a foamy

Nothing that I'm aware of.... It's not the paint but the propellant that will eat the foam...

Re: Painting a foamy

For Depron foam try Krylon H20, latex based and the propellant is primarily ether and propanol neither of which will eat foam. As well, Tamiya Color model paints will work. They are considerably more expensive, but can be purchased in a great variety of colours. Unfortunately the H20 only comes in the primary five or six colours. Check the labels of other products; if the propellant or evaporant is acetone or similar, it will eat foam, however if your very careful you can apply very, very light coats and minimize any damage.

Re: Painting a foamy

I just did a quick search on the Internet for Krylon H2O and couldn't find a listing. I wonder if it's been discontinued? Hmm.

I last purchased my cans at Home Hardware, but that was over a year ago.

Re: Painting a foamy

I guess dollarstore acrylic with a brush or airbrush would be great.

Re: Painting a foamy

Brushing on dollar store (or any other) paint will be really expensive in terms of weight gain. Definitely go with an airbrush - even a cheapo HK one is better than a brush.

As to aerosol's - yeah, avoid the acetone ones for most foams; however, as Peter mentioned, one can get away with many very light coats of them on tougher foams like EPP. Just keep the can well back and let the coats dry between applications. There's a guy in our indoor that does EPP this way and it comes out pretty nice.

Cheers,
J

Re: Painting a foamy

As to the Krylon I discovered that their Short Cuts line is good with some foams but it is not marketed in Canada.

Thanks for all the input.

I wholeheartedly agree. Extra weight on indoor foamys is a killer.

Hey And: I know that here is certain amount of artistic flair, individuality, pride and satisfaction that comes with painting a model, however, have you considered decorating your foamys with coloured packing tape? Packing tape comes in a pretty good variety of colours (I think that I have them all. lol), is only 2.2 mil thick and will add considerable strength to your airframe. If you take your time you can come up with some amazing designs, all without the hassle of spray paint. The stuff is easy to apply and when "set" sticks like sh*t to a blanket I've drifted away almost completely from painting my foamys in favour of packing tape. Something to consider.

I have run right now, but later tonight I'll post a couple of pics of my designs and explain how I painlessly cut and apply tape to my foamys.
