Re: 3D versus pattern

I'm new but I think I have a handle on the difference between the two.

Pattern is precision flying in patterns, hence the name. Loops, rolls, and other precise maneuvers done in competition and judged on the precision, staying on flight line, size and symetry of loops, etc.

3D is more of a freestyle type of flying that includes hovering, harriers, torque rolls in either one, tumbling, etc. Personally, I find 3D to look like being out of control, but in reality it is full control and quite difficult.

However, I think out of the two, pattern is tougher to do in competition because of the precision of it. I actually enjoy practicing both. Hopefully next year I'll be able to compete in the entry classes of Pattern, or IMAC. I don't think we have 3D Freestyle competitions here in Canada, but I could be wrong.

Re: 3D versus pattern

By no means am I, or could I be considered an expert in either discipline, however I believe that once you rely more on thrust (i.e. high alpha flight & hovering) than the aerodynamic lift produced by the wings you are into 3D manoeuvres.
