I have a Zenoah G26-EI engine. I'm trying to figure out where to mount the ei unit.
I see all kinds of pictures with the ei unit mounted forward of the firewall near the engine. Isn't the heat bad for it?
I would like to mount it on the firewall directly behind the engine. If I have to mount the ei unit behind the firewall, I would have to cut a large hole in the firewall to pass through the sparkplug wire.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Most planes have a location on either side of the motor box to mount the ignition module.

Re: EI Location

These new ignitions can tolerate heat better than the older ones, however if you can get it behind the firewall by all means.

As for the spark plug lead. You can cut a hole large enough for the lead to go through, then build yourself a cover plate to fit over the hole, mount it with 4 screws, then remove. In the cover plate drill a hole in the center large enough to accept a grommet large enough for your lead wire. Then cut your mounting plate in half and slit the grommet on one side. Pull your spark plug lead though the main hole, slip the grommet over the plug wire, then mount each half back on to the engine box encasing the grommet and spark plug wire.
